Wilson / Jackson-Reed Teacher saying slurs

No one knows what to do with them. The parents are checked out.
School districts just want them to graduate even if they do no work so they can check the box and make them someone else’s problem.
It takes a lot of resources to help these kids. Unfortunately these situations negatively affects the entire school community

Mae talk a good game about mental health but in DCPS the funding is definitely NOT there. In my school we could triple the number of mental health providers and maybe meet demand.

They need counselors and the school writ all needs a better ethos. It sounds chaotic. What does Jackson Reed stand for? What does a graduate want to be? They need to be a little less Animal House, a little more Morehouse.

It was wrong to videotape the incident and post it on the internet.
This is an internal school matter that should be handled accordingly.
Why disrespect the student and teacher’s privacy like that? Whoever videotaped and posted it should be ashamed of themselves

At this point it's newsworthy. Link?

He doesn't need a defense. He repeated the word, he didn't call anyone it. And the word isn't magical, FFS.

While I don’t disagree in theory the reality is that kids record and post everything these days. You should assume you are always being recorded in some fashion when you walk out of your house.

He didn't "use" it, he repeated it back to a student who called him it. If you can't see the difference, you're beyond help.

Also, don't forget to teach your kids when to, and not to use the word.

Actually, were I in the same position as this teacher, I would hope to have the same presence of mind to say it right back to the person who used it against me.

Funny how this thread focuses on the teacher and not that kid. Where are his parents? Where is the school counselor? He’s going nowhere fast if someone doesn’t step in. But now he’s kryptonite.

Wild times.

You all are trying to make this white man a hero because he said N* to a black kid. It sounds like he is a wonderful teacher and has a huge impact at Wilson however what many of you are most proud of is he repeated the word back to the kid.

I fear for the life of my black son.

That's your takeaway? I white teacher responds calmly to a disruptive, disrespectful, abusive black boy, and you fear for you black son?

Has nothing to do with the actions of the teacher and the students. Has everything to do with the posters on this forum and what you all represent. Plenty of racism makes it rounds on DCUM and it is generally excused and accepted. I don’t expect you do understand because I’m assuming you like most other posters on this forum aren’t black. I said nothing at any point to attack the teacher or support the actions of the students. It is you posters that terrify me.

So you’re terrified that your black son might be a disruptive asshole in class and try to take out an excellent teacher and… what… white folks on DCUM won’t have sympathy for him?

There are plenty of reasons to worry about black children. This incident/thread are not one of them.

I am a veteran DCPS High School educator who is well attuned to the issues that take place within the classroom. I never insulted the teacher nor asked for sympathy for the child. Again, I don’t expect you to understand. Seems you are more invested in trolling than seeking to understand. So I won’t bother explaining myself to you. Have a great day.

Honestly you’re just making this situation about you, which is ridiculous. This has nothing to do with you. This is about one kid’s bad behavior and a bunch of other kids piling on.

JR HS has always been a place where the adults will always be admonished before an issue with a student is dealt with. Never ever changes. The distrust of admin continues

He repeated it back. Your words. He did not call the kid a slur. The kid’s behavior should be the focus but here it has become all about the teacher. No consequences for that kid who obviously needs support but at minimum needs to stop disrespecting teachers and disrupting classrooms where other kids are trying to learn.

And yes, if someone is all up in my grill, cursing at me and insulting me, I am going to defend myself.

This teacher is a good man. He was called a f-ing (F word - homophobic slur & to suck private parts). This particular student has told this teacher and his co-teacher to “F off” all semester. He is teaching and being videotaped. I hope you volunteer to be in the classroom. We have fifteen calendar days and we have been serving your children. Walk a mile in his shoes.
Why can't kids like this be thrown out of school ??? The kid is not only f'ing up his life, but he's f'ing up hundreds of other kids school experience.
This. Sure some kids who act out may have some mental health issues or IEP, etc.. but let’s not pretend it’s everyone. Some kids DGAF about school and destroy the experiences of teachers and students. They are one of the reasons teachers leave. They know they can do whatever they want with no real consequences.

It is not just JR. MCPS is the same way.
The US does not value education like most other countries.
Not sure where this is all going to lead us.
