So you must not go to many tryouts. Team was decent (I was at couple of others over the last week or so where the talent was head and shoulders better). It was interesting that you would even call it a tryout given no numbers were handed out and the coaches didn't even have a clipboard. Not that I care but it is interesting to see how blatant, as in not important, the coach thought the tryout was. At least he had the decency to not charge for it.

In our experience, teams are decided before tryouts. For this reason we quit trying to find an AAU team.

My kid has made multiple teams through tryouts. Don’t listen to pp. If your kid is good enough to start, they will make most teams

They had 50 kids there and didn't have the courtesy of pretending it was a tryout by giving out numbers?

Vague posts on anonymous forums make me assume that you don't know what you are talking about. Given that there are three AAU teams names in the subject of the thread, why don't you just call it out? What team had "head and shoulders" better talent. Stars? Nova94? Did you go to the other local AAU team's tryouts that aren't named in the subject? This thread has been helpful to people I know so let's keep it up if we can!

The tryouts were for teams not mentioned in the heading. The type of tryouts where the team doesn't really have a big internet presence - maybe an IG page. Those are invite only type. That fact you don't realize there are really different levels of AAU makes me wonder if you know anything. There is the AAU with NOVA Cavs, NOVA 94, etc. level where there is maybe one or two low end DI players on a team (and a bunch of D3 types) Then there is the entirely other level of teams usually one off teams that compete at extremely high level tournaments. But, I guess you can say there is a 3rd level that sort of mixes the two - Team Melo and the like.

PP

Yes, NoVA Cavs did not hand out numbers and the coach knew some of the boys' names already from FCYBL Travel or from last year's tryouts (he remembered my son who didn't make the team. LOL). But, the coaches and assistants were taking notes and asking names during scrimmages.

My son also tried out for a more elite "invite only" team in Maryland and he's still in the mix. But, as we've learned this past year, team coaches invite a number of boys--past teammates of current players and friends of the players and/or dad friends (daddy ball)... connections over talent in some cases. So the elite teams essentially bring on a number of benchers who will start off strong and enthusiastic then eventually drop off.

LOL. You sound lovely. There are many D1 type players on those teams. The 8th grade D1 FCYBL team allegedly from McLean is almost entirely a Nova94 team, and they are crushing all the other teams.

I know enough about basketball not to assign "d1" to 11 and 12 year olds... the age I thought we were discussing here. And I'm familiar with many of the MD AAU teams, but honestly if you are good enough to be on Team Takeover or Team Durant, you sure as heck aren't going to a Nova Cavs tryout and complaining that it's rigged. So, yeah to go with your theme, I guess YOU implied that your son is D3 or whatever that means amongst boys. FWIW, the #1 and #2 teams in FCYBL are primarily made up of Nova 94 and Nova Cavs kids because the kids who play at "extremely high level tournaments" aren't in the FCYBL.

Carefully wading into this discussion to say I see Team Takeover mentioned here- I can assume that team is good? My son knows someone on it and supposedly the kid is very good basketball. Not a basketball family here at all so unfamiliar with any teams or orgs.

NOPE. Our son, one of his current FCYBL teammates, a former AAU teammate and 2 of his friends from other FCYBL teams were all unknown to the coaches yet they all played very well at tryout scrimmages and made a NoVA Cavs team, both 11U and 12U "A" teams.

^^ Oops I meant to type YES, good players can make the teams without prior hooks.

Agreed. My son could only make it to one tryout and made the team with one of these teams. It's pretty easy to tell who has strong basketball skills quickly. Shooting form, dribbling ability, court awareness are all quite apparent and no coach is going to turn down outstanding talent.

Gillion Basketball Academy/Team Breakdown is starting a Middle School AAU program that has tryouts coming up. Will be run like an AAU program but focusing more on individual skill building than simply putting a team together to win meaningless tournaments. Great way to have your kid bridge to MS teams or HS teams and learn how to play basketball than most middle school AAU teams run by parents who just try and win games and kids skills get left behind. Our son plays for the U17/U16 Team Breakdown here in DMV and learned baout the MS program.

Where will the practices be located?

I was told they are looking to secure space at George Mason University rec center on thier campus. I hear they have a nice facility. They had clinics in Falls Church and last one in Lorton but Coach told me they are looking for a lopng term location for weekly practices and then some regulations games.
