A family with two PhDs as parents is not working class or even true middle class. I grew up in a working/middle class neighborhood and no one I knew had parents who were PhDs. It’s incredibly privileged to have parents with that much education.

It is at least upper middle class to have such highly educated parents.

My DH’s dad had a PhD and looked down on everyone else in their working class neighborhood but he couldn’t keep a job. If it wasn’t for his mom who was a tech at a hospital they would have been in serious trouble. PhDs cost money but they don’t always make money.
