Rave about your DCPS/charter school

We recently came to the decision we can't swing private school for DS. Its disappointing because we saw some privates that seemed like a good fit for him. Moreover, I hear a lot of parents raving about their kid's private school education (their kids love to learn, love to go to school, have really learned to think in a critical and analytical way). If you love the education your child is getting at a DCPS or charter school, can you talk about which one and rave about it here? I would love to hear some great stories as we start our search again (this is for the 2013-2014 year)

Oh come on, it's a reasonable question!

We were extremely happy with our child's classroom experience in PS at Inspired Teaching.

Super happy with DD at YY. She tells me that she likes Chinese better than English...

Raving and boostering about your school can cause this blog to implode in 10, 9, 8, ......seconds. BOOM!!! Let's try a little later, because many of the "cheerleaders" are still at camp.

Another cheerleader for Inspired Teaching. My son has been dying to go back to school all summer. I hope they have a summer program next year. The teachers are engaging, creative and bring out the best in students. The families are all super excited to be a part of the school. I really can't describe the energy but it certainly is a great place to be. The teaching is strong and fun at the same time.

Another booster for YY. DS loves it. Will be in the jumbo rising K class where preK was only in Mandarin and as far as I know everyone is returning. Complete immersion worked out very well. We chose YY over a well regarded private b/c we wanted immersion Chinese and very happy we did. Love the school!

Another YY booster, although I think it is best for people with a real interest in their kids learning Mandarin for the long term.

OP back. This is all great. Specifically, if you have a child who is K-5 and loves learning, you have seen them think analytically, love learning, etc it would be great, Thanks everyone!

My child in K is also at Inspired Teaching and we think it compares to the best private schools in DC for many reasons. They hire superstar teachers (masters and residents), the energy in classrooms is strong, and the interdisciplinary and engaging learning is on display for parents to see daily and at four special evening events through the year.

Because it's lottery, though, try not to get your heart set on any one school. Not sure how old your child is, but if you're hoping to get into K next year, that cohort this year (PK4) already has 100s on their waiting list for 44 spots, the majority of whom are returning from a strong PS3 year. I'll be surprised if more than 15 spots open up in that class this year. Best of luck.

Loved Elsie Whitlow Stokes charter school Sooo much.
Son now getting ready to attend School Without Walls.
The summer bridge program at Walls was great!
Best not to say anything about the middle school

Had fabulous experiences at both Janney and Deal. My oldest will choose a HS this year. Biggest concern about Wilson is the size. I found Janney and Deal wonderfully nurturing places that exposed my children to all aspects of education. Gave extra help or more challenge when needed. Staff is very accessible. The enrichment options at Janney are beyond compare both during the day with their clubs program and after school. Both are relatively new programs.

I encountered a child this year who attended Eliot-Hine and he was an exceptional child at the school. His parents were a PTSA membership joy, their son is now off to Ellington but wanted to attend Eastern but his dad is an alum of Ellington and it was the legacy situation that won out. So, I am rah-rah for Eliot-Hine, Ellington and Eastern...wait the three E's.
