Freaking out! Wanted to move before school started but .. zoned for stoddart!

Anonymous
We are zoned for stoddart, but I have heard pretty bad reviews and wanted to move before DC started kindergarden. It looks like we will have to wait till after labor day to buy so what are my options? I don't want to move my child mid year. So if he starts in Stoddart, I would like for him to finish out the year. Will the school let us finish out the year even if we move OOB. Also, are there any private schools still accepting applications this late in the game. Thanks for any advice on schools and if you are a stoddart parent, please tell me about your experience.

My DC is sort of advanced, reading level 2-3, knows basic addition and subtraction in math! Basically, he would fit in well with a 1st grade curriculum, however socially, he needs to be with his peers. What can I expect and what should I be doing so he continues on his learning curve.

Thanks so much!

You should check out the British School of Washington in Glover Park/Georgetown. The British system is a little faster in the early years, so doing one year there and then moving wouldn't be a bad thing. And you may decide to stay (plenty of people do). They have rolling admissions and are a fairly new school, so easy to get into. The British teachers are very good and the class sizes are small.

I'd just go with Stoddart. It's just for a year, and it's kindergarten-- it's about learning social skills mOre than academic skills in many cultures. Continue with what you are already doing at home, plus ask about what additionAl services the school provides for advanced students. They likely have differentiated learning so yOur child my be taught in the advanced group. They may also have online resources. Our dcps provides ixl.com for math and my rising kindergartner loves it. And it helps me discover areas that she needs help!

You should chill. It's kindergarten.

Why not rent in a better school district in MD or VA? It will get you in and start your child in the system you want.

Have you even been to the school? People love it. Chill out.

Stoddert is a GREAT school.
Just because there are lots of foregn kids (mostly embassies) does not mean the level is not good -- just the opposite!

I would LOVE to be in-bounds for Stoddert. Count your blessings!
Give it a year, and decide at the end of kindergarten. You may decide to stay if it ends up being a good fit.

Wow, I've never heard anyone complain about being zoned for Stoddert before. What did you hear that was so awful? I've only heard good things and was impressed wheni visited.

I kind of view Stoddert as being on-par with a JKLM. So not sure what you're upset about....

OP:

did you forget to take your meds?

Maybe that's why ur freaking out about a school most of us would love to send r kids to?

Would love OP to send her kid to private in order to free up a lottery spot. Please go!

If your child is above average, it does not matter.

Obviously you are not committed to the school .... it is Stoddert NOT Stoddart

but I would be concerned as well. A few years ago Stoddert had the highest CAS scores in DC. They are now down to the low 80's - some of the lowest scores west of the park.
