Freaking out! Wanted to move before school started but .. zoned for stoddart!

The beloved principal just left (for valid personal reasons) with the chancellor appointing an interim.

but I would be concerned as well. A few years ago Stoddert had the highest CAS scores in DC. They are now down to the low 80's - some of the lowest scores west of the park.[/quo

Stoddert has a very high ELL population (at least 1/3), and still does great.

True, they are not hispanics but English is a 3rd even a 4th language for many.

Great teachers and very nurturing environment!

Possible reasons:

1. cheating

2. a new batch of ELL kids with less developed language skills

3. fewer or less experienced ELL teachers

It looks like the 2010 scores were an anomaly, especially in reading. Per the Northwest Current:

Reading:
2008 - 73.3
2009 - 74.5
2010 - 87.0
2011 - 78.1
2012 - 77.6

Math
2008 - 61.6
2009 - 79.5
2010 - 89.3
2011 - 83.7
2012 - 84.8

That the math scores are so much higher than the reading scores lends credence to the ELL theory.

Scores are irrelevant. OP was freaking out over one year of kindergarten for a "sort of advanced" child who should be in kindergarten for social reasons.

OP, the consensus seems to be chill out. Stoddert is unique in it's fabulous facilities and diverse families from embassies and Billing airforce base. Your child will be fine and you will save $30,000 for a year.

There was a thread a few months ago about Stoddert vis-a-vis JKLM. The general agreement was that Stoddert was a teeny tiny notch down JKLM for a number or reasons (more diverse, more ELL, embassy and therefore more transcient and therefore slightly less involved parents, Hardy not Deal); that said, kids with highly involved parents with a high degree of educational attaintment should do just as well as similar kids in JKLM.

Do relax.

Yes, the JKLM mommies generally agreed that their snowflakes' school were better. Achievement scores be damned! Stoddert parents aren't as well represented on this board, many of them being either military or embassy children.

Or perhaps Stoddert parents have enough confidence in the school and in their choice that they don't need to participate in the discussions on this board.

Considering your fear of Stoddert, you sound a bit high strung and potentially afraid of your child mixing with a well representated population of families and students who actually represent Society! Therefore, do you and your child a favor and allow the child to attend the school. It is not only an awesome environment, but your child will thrive and be very happy, and you yourself will grow a little bit. If you want 100% white milk move, but you are delaying the inevitable -- the world doesn't look like Key or Mann. Stoddert is a gift. Accept it.

Anonymous wrote:We are zoned for stoddart, but I have heard pretty bad reviews and wanted to move before DC started kindergarden. It looks like we will have to wait till after labor day to buy so what are my options? I don't want to move my child mid year. So if he starts in Stoddart, I would like for him to finish out the year. Will the school let us finish out the year even if we move OOB. Also, are there any private schools still accepting applications this late in the game. Thanks for any advice on schools and if you are a stoddart parent, please tell me about your experience.

My DC is sort of advanced, reading level 2-3, knows basic addition and subtraction in math! Basically, he would fit in well with a 1st grade curriculum, however socially, he needs to be with his peers. What can I expect and what should I be doing so he continues on his learning curve.

Thanks so much!

If your child start out at Stoddart, and u move they will not have yoou leave...

Good grief! Stoddert is a lovely school with nurturing and effective k teachers. I think if you looked back at this post in a few years you would laugh empathicaly at yourself, your level of anxiety, and your vision of your child as a potential genius. Bright children do just fine at Stoddert and do get more challenging work. Though perhaps the notion of work in k is a bit mis

Con't : misplaced. Relax. It will be just fine. You will find many pleasant surprises, even when you least expect it!!

P. s. no offense about the "looking back" thing. We've all been there!
