The real estate tax rate remained flat and I voted in favor of the meals tax when it was on the ballot.

RE tax remaining flat is an illusion. The rate remained the same, but assessed values increased, increasing tax bills to taxpayers and increasing revenue for the County. The County has a spending problem, not an income problem.

I’m aware of this. I also believe we are starting to see a downturn in home values.

Not according to the assessment notice I received yesterday from the County. My taxes are increasing.

Yes, based on the previous year’s sales. 2026 has slowed. Houses are on the market longer and sales prices are down. Government layoffs and shutdowns aren’t helping.

The metric the County uses reflects increasing home values, not flat or decreasing. That's why taxes are going up while the rate remains unchanged, allowing the County to take in more revenue without the negative implications for the Supervisors' political futures if they just raise the rate. .

Republicans love to even more.

No, they spend less overall and spend differently.

Citation needed.

Because it's not blindingly obvious?

It's really not. Republicans add more to the national debt per year than Democrats. Why would it be if they were in charge of Fairfax County?

Yes. I understand all of that. Do you think home values are going to keep increasing? We aren’t seeing that in our part of the county. Homes are being listed at lower prices and some are dropping their prices as the houses sit on the market,

Republicans haven't had control of Fairfax County in many years. Dems own this F up.

Home prices trends writ large are seemingly irrelevant to the County. If home prices were declining, and it mattered, tax assessments would also decline. They are not. Ipso facto, either home prices are not declining or they are unrelated to the County's mechanism for increasing tax revenue on the backs of homeowners through real estate taxes.

+1 It's insane. Literally insane. I guess that's why people are leaving...

If Republicans were normal maybe more people would vote for them. As of now, they’re corrupt, racist, feeble, spineless and morally bankrupt.

Great, because people will be subtracting this "meals tax" out of the tips. People don't like to suddenly pay more. And this also can result in people reducing spending on prepared meals, since unlike RE tax, it's not mandatory.

It's 1%. Does it really make a difference in your life?

DP. Meals tax is not 1%, it is 4%. Total sales tax on meals is now 10%. Then you are supposed to tip another 20%. Then many of the restaurants we go to raised prices at the start of the year. A $40 meal a year ago is now $55 for a family of 4 at our favorite place. It's all compounded together. Instead of going every weekend like we used to, we're now skipping some weeks.

How much are you people eating out that you are freaking out about the meal tax? Reminds me of the NY Times article about people who do Uber Eats or Door Dash every night.

I just did my taxes and I owe half what I did last year. I have really simple taxes. I was pretty surprised.

No, people will notice the cost of dining out is increasing, and they'll cut back accordingly. Restaurants will hire fewer people, will pay less in revenue-based taxes, and may cease operating altogether. You can only squeeze so far before there's no more to be had.

Sorry to break it to you, chicken little, that isn't what's happened in this era of hyperinflation. People are still eating out. In droves.

So odd that GOP/MAGA used to be fiscal conservatives. Now it's a 100% Dem position.

Because I want my future grandkids to have a good life, I will continue to vote Dem.

Are you referring to Pillar Two, recommended by the OECD Inclusive Framework? They just adopted the US side-by-side solution for GILTI.

But that's all corporate stuff. Do you mean personal income tax?

Thanks MAGA for destroying tax base with all the federal job cuts, for giving more tax breaks to millionaires and billionaires, and destroying heathcare (double digit premium increases), cozing up to tech monopolies/oligopolies, grifting/corruption as if we are a 3rd world country....lot of thanks for destroying "goldilocks" economy from last administration.
