Any chance for Skyview (previously Western) High School opt-in out of current boundaries?

Are you talking about the meetings that took place before class selection with the 10-15 minute presentations? That the parents were emailed about? My kid is at Carson in 8th grade, he has not mentioned any additional meetings to discuss the school at school.

No I am not talking about that. I’m talking about students removed from class at Thoreau with no parental notification to be given a sales pitch about Skyview.

I love how everyone on this board is constantly trying to tell people things didn’t happen when they have no idea what they’re talking about

Weird that they are doing that. I wonder how many other schools they are doing it at.

They are probably at Thoreau for Oakton zoned kids but there are also Marshall zoned kids who live very close to Crossfield neighborhoods on Fox Mill rd.

They had meetings with the 8th graders at Hughes, it feeds South Lakes. So they are having the conversations with the kids who could attend one of the 5 HS. It sounds like those are continuing.

Update: They have opened opt-in to all of Fairfax county. If you send a communication through their website form, they will provide further information. https://www.fcps.edu/skyview

Odd since the FAQs at this link just say kids from five pyramids can opt in and the deadline expired. Sounds like they want more kids but don’t want to admit they couldn’t fill their classes with kids from the schools they were saying were overcrowded.

I to admit they couldn’t fill their classes with kids from the schools they were saying were overcrowded.

Gee. Just imagine that when kids find out others are not opting in because of the uncertainty, some decide just maybe this is not a good idea.

Parents realizing that they may have to do kiss and ride on a daily basis. They likely live close and assumed they would be in boundary, but now are realizing that this just may not work.

Whoever thought that opening a school before you set boundaries would work? Did anyone on staff challenge this with Reid? Who is making decisions? Who does she listen to?

700 kids from the 5 pyramids opted in. The original email to those kids said that kids had the choice to opt out by 1 march and that others could opt in by 1 March. There is an open house on Saturday for people still on the fence. The email to the kids who opted in said that the remainder of the seats would be open to kids outside of the original 5 pyramids.

I keep hoping they release what number of kids opted in from what ES block. We know someone told the SLHS PTA that 45 kids had opted in from SLHS for the 9th grade class. I would be interested in knowing how many kids opted in from the specific ES but that is because I am curious. The fact that 700 kids opted in with the lack of boundaries and lack of sports next year is, in my mind, impressive. But that is my take on it.

I don't think there is going to be much of a problem getting the 9th grade class to 500, we'll see about the 10th graders.

I am going to be curious to see what happens with the Herndon Kids who had been placing into Langley for Russian since they cannot do that any more. How many of them will find their way to Skyview over SLHS over staying at Herndon.

They sent an email today saying "nearly 650 students" have signed up. That's not 700.

What makes you think they won't get grandfathered into Langley? There is a sizeable number of kids who transfer from Westfield to Langley using the Russian loophole.

You should FOIA the information and share it here. They have to have been tracking that information so it shouldn't be an expensive request to address.

I don't read PP's post as necessarily suggesting the kids who've already placed into Langley from Herndon for language won't be allowed to continue. But FCPS has clearly stated it's not accepting new student transfer requests for foreign language.

In Herndon's case, the number of students transferring into Langley, presumably for a foreign language (fewer than 10 this year) is much smaller than the number transferring into South Lakes, presumably for IB (158). The question, going forward, is how opening Skyview may affect transfers among Herndon, South Lakes, and Skyview.

The aviation stuff is unlikely to show up in the curriculum for at least another 4-5 years.

Freshman won’t be grandfathered in.

We heard 700 on Tuesday night.
