And then Friday people will complain it's too cold to open

How does that work for makeup days?

It would only apply to schools that closed.

Individual schools have been closed before for local issues (power outages, burst pipes), and they haven't had to make up those days.

You mean schools only have to makeup days if their entire district was closed?

No they build two days into the existing calendar. After that they add days to the end or ask the state to excuse them.

There is only one day built into the calendar this year.

Same for next year.

I’m sorry but if everyone wants to close at the first snowflake then they are going to need to build in more days. Of course, then people will just say the makeup days if used are useless and no one learns anything on them.

This. I don't mind that everyone freaks out at the sight of a snowflake. Or that the county forgets how to clear snow from year to year. But the school system can plan around the snow related incompetence by building in more snow days. And if we don't use them, what's the worst that happens? More days in school? The horror!

We get 10+ inches Sunday with a dig out Monday followed by a deep freeze, I wouldn’t be surprised to get Tuesday to Thursday off.

I’d be happy with enough snow to get Tuesday off though.

We're not getting much snow. MCPS has plenty of time to prepare.

Are you new here? MCPS always has time to prepare. And they always fail.

Signed an MCPS parent since 2009 (when schools were closed for an entire week before the December break due to snow.)

Right now models are forecasting 8+ inches of snow for Sunday into Monday. The forecast is not set in stone yet, of course, we're too far out. However, if 8 inches materializes across MoCo, then you can count on at least a Tuesday closure if not a Wednesday closure and beyond. There is nothing to prepare, PP. The issue is not enough plows across the area to take care of that amount of snow in a short amount of time. Don't know where you're from, but MoCo does not often have such snows. With climate change, this area is turning sub-tropical.

European model says 14 inches in D.C.
Do you think we could get some Ice due to cold temperatures? Wednesday and Tuesday closures?

MCPS never prepares well. Just last year the kids had almost the whole week off even though MCPS had time to prepare.

It’s too early to even predict.

Calm down. Wait till Friday to get your panties in a wad.

Kids are already off on Monday. Teachers are supposed to report for grading, so maybe co will be quicker to close for all.

European model is often optimistic in its snow totals.

That's because it assumes all moisture will fall as snow rather than a mix.

Due to cold Temps, there is a good chance this is an all snow event so the euro model might be accurate.

MCPS has intentionally scheduled makeup days lately that are useless. If they made March 20 or April 15 a school day, it would feel like a normal school day and there would be plenty of learning. Even if they made those days half-days, there would still be learning. It's the end of the year stuff (or the ridiculous "asynchronous learning" day) that is mostly wasted time.

This area has plenty of plows. You don't seem to drive after snow. Most places are plowed within a day, and many of the areas that aren't plowed just have to go a couple blocks to get to a plowed street.

The issue historically has been that MCPS isn't ready.
