Snow This Weekend - School Next Week?

Anonymous
Is it too early to discuss this? If we get snow Sunday, I'm thinking schools will be closed Monday and Tuesday. It'll be interesting to see how this all plays out with the possibility of snow on Sunday and the frigid temps continuing through next week.

MCPS is closed Monday for students already.

It's too early to tell, OP. Since Monday is closed already, it would take at least 6 inches on Sunday in a large swathe of MoCo to affect the Tuesday school day, and/or a re-icing event Monday night.

Per the Capital Weather Gang

The weekend is cloudy and frigid with potential for a winter storm. Sometime between midday Saturday and late Sunday looks to be the period of concern, but timing could still shift. Several inches or more of accumulating snow are possible, as is a miss to the south. Weekend highs are probably in the 20s at best. Some northern to western suburbs could flirt with single-digit lows. Brrr! Confidence: Low

I agree it's too early to tell, but it does seem to take forever for MoCo to get back to school after a snow event, and only a small area of the county needs to be affected for them to call it for everyone. Unless it misses us entirely, I think a delay or (more likely) closure on Tuesday is fairly likely.

Someone on another thread just ordered sleds and snow pants. We will therefore get nothing!

PP you replied to. I agree with you in general, with the caveat that schools never decide solely based on actual weather conditions, but unfortunately also decide based on other criteria . At the beginning of the winter season, when families aren't used to snow, schools tend to close at the drop of the hat. In years when we've had several snow accumulations per winter, schools end up staying open for the last ones. Since we are forecast to have several snow events back to back from Jan 24th to Feb 1st, we might see this behavior in action this year...

Prepare for Taylor’s new approach of closing some schools and not others

I don't think it's too early to tell. Pretty certain that at least part of the county will get 4+ inches of snow throughout the day Sunday. That means plowing won't happen until Monday with "assessing things" Monday evening. The county as a whole has never been able to clear 4+ inches of snow everywhere in one day. I predict closure on Tuesday for sure, with the biggest problem area being the elementary school lots because people parked in them to get of the neighborhood roads and the lots can't be cleared.

If we get 8+ inches then closed Wednesday also. It takes at least 3 days to clear that much.

It's too early to call. We will certainly get hit by a polar vortex intrusion but where the snow storm hits is still highly uncertain. - signed by a NOAA NWP modeler who dedicates the entire career on improving hydrometeor parameterizations in NWP models.

How are you doing, PP? Still working at NOAA? How's the morale there? My friend was let go from NOAA last year.

Operational sector and satellite sector are doing OK, partially saved by the cost of the dozens of lives from the Texas flood tragedy. Low morale for R&D, which I stay, but thanks for your kindness.

How does that work for makeup days?

It would only apply to schools that closed.

Did I miss something? Since when is that an option?
