My family and I are non-white Europeans living in MD and we go into DC once a week.
I am rethinking our entire US life, not just the DC visits. Our kids were born here - this is the only nationality they identify with. We have lived here for 20 years on a series of work visas. Currently we are waiting on our green card application, and have a valid work permit... but I am very worried that despite our legal status, and absence of any outstanding issue during our decades-long stay in the US, ICE can detain us and deport us for any reason, such as a minor traffic violation. I don't think getting a ticket for coming to a rolling stop at a stop sign, for example, should be grounds for sleeping on the floor for several days before being removed from the country. Reputable media have reported on other Europeans deported for ridiculously petty reasons, despite coming into the country legally, having no visa overstays, being legally allowed to work on the appropriate, non-expired visa, and paying all appropriate taxes. I am on a daily medication and I am pretty certain that given reported overcrowding at ICE holding centers in the DC area, this medication will not be given to me correctly in detention. So I could literally die in detention - not because any ICE agent wants my death, but because they're stretched too thin to provide adequate care to their detainees. Also, they don't care. Living in the US for internationals of legal status like me is becoming very stressful. I feel we're in a dystopia and that too many people are normalizing this state of affairs. No, it is not normal. Part of me wants to stay in the hope that this is just a temporary hardship that will get better in 3 years. But another part of me thinks I am risking my life if I don't have access to medication in detention. The human brain has a very hard time calculating the risks of an event that has a low probability of happening, but the consequences of which will be severe if it does come to pass. I am still trying to figure it out. Maybe I have to travel with 3 months worth of meds on my person? |
| OP's concern seems reasonable to me. If truly concerned, then wear a MAGA hat. |
The Supreme Court said yes, that's allowed now, just last week. We are living in crazy times. |
| It’s very scary being a minority in this country right now. I’m terrified of being grabbed and thrown in some cell even though I’m a citizen. The government doesn’t seem to care |
That's what the Supreme Card says, sadly. |
It is perfectly acceptable for the ICE to stop and detain you. They also don't need to accept your papers, real ID, etc. because they can take the position that they need to be verified as true and accurate. Right now, THAT PROCESS CAN TAKE SEVERAL DAYS. During this time, you can be put in jail while they sort this out. Miss your kids pick up from school because of this? Welcome to the world of CPS -- you may or may not get your kids back in a quick fashion and you better pray they aren't abused while they are in some sort of temporary foster situation with CPS. Of course, people think this is an overreaction. But it's all perfectly legal and fine and you are screwed and have zero recourse legally. That's really the risk here. Will it happen? Who knows. But if it does, you will be screwed and have zero recourse. |
No, that's not a thing. Quit making up racist remarks like that. |
One of my coworkers, "visible minority", lives in Arlington and regularly goes to DC on his bike. He has been stopped several times. He now carries his passport with him. I'm disgusted they are profiling him while doing a leisure activity but to be honest, he doesn't even mind. He says he has nothing to hide or fear... My family is also Hispanic but we are "White passing" so I don't carry anything else besides my driver license. I do have a picture of my passport on my phone just in case. |
It is insanely interesting how much points like this are being completely utterly ignored. Posters prefer to sow discord, throw out strawmen and just create noise over engaging with this very real take on the situation in the country. |
wtf are work credentials |

They are either going to: (1) argue nonsense and try to whatabout the issue or (2) this thread will die a slow death and they will create a new thread to justify their targeting of minorities and ignoring white people. |
Social media users continue to pick apart unverified information gleaned from the social media accounts of the alleged shooter’s family. But it’s still too early to definitively say what Robinson believed. “Bella Ciao” is an old anti-fascist song dedicated to anti-Nazi resistance fighters in Italy during World War II. Groypers, the term for far-right and white nationalist social media users who are terminally online and follow white supremacist Nick Fuentes, seemed uneasy in their discussions on 4Chan Friday, with some seeing overlap in the etched messages and typical Groyper humor. |
Ugh, this is about ICE. |
Yes you have to have a passport or a passport card. They are stopping pretty much all minorities. High school kids are being told they do not look American and to proof their citizenship. |
