If you are a visible minority, is it safe to go into DC? Also if you get approached by ICE what documents do you need as proof of citizenship? A driver's license is not necessarily proof that you're a citizen, so what do you actually need? Are you supposed to carry a passport at all times?? |
Yes I do carry my passport. |
From my understanding, based on 2 US citizens who were separately detained and questioned by ICE at a checkpoint on Clara Barton PKWY, they pull over "work vehicles" driven by poc. These people were not laborers, quite the contrary, but their respective vehicles had business names on them. They showed their IDs and work credentials and were let go. |
I would avoid. |
Nope nope nope.
You can be detained for days while ICE slowly verifies your documents. Its pointless to even have papers. They can just say that they are fake and hold you until they get it sorted out. That means days in a crowded and nasty jail. Who would risk that? |
What do you mean by visible minority? As horrible as the ICE raids have been, I haven't heard of any Black or Asian people being randomly stopped or arrested. And the Hispanic people have been typically targeted either specifically, or because they are working jobs often filled by undocumented workers, such as food delivery.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think ICE is stopping any Hispanic men who are walking from their office job to get lunch at Au Bon Pain. |
They pulled over a car full of Howard students and surrounded the car with rifles and demanded they exit. Did not ask for ids from students. Arrested one of the students. That scared me. |
Do you mean this case?
https://thedig.howard.edu/announcements/letter-howard-community-regarding-u-street-incident https://www.fox5dc.com/news/howard-university-student-arrested-dc-police-who-say-he-was-fleeing-from-officer-mpd "A Howard University student was arrested and charged after allegedly fleeing a traffic stop and possessing drugs early Saturday morning in northwest Washington, Metropolitan Police Department officials say." I don't know whether the MPD's actions were justified or not. Both police and people who have been arrested lie. But this kind of stop has occurred periodically over past decades, and since it was MPD and not ICE or other federal authorities, I'd bet it's unrelated to the federal actions. |
You haven't heard because MSM isn't reporting it. And certainly not the faux network where 50% of the nation "hears things" from. |
THIS. There is free reign to arrest first and sort out later. Add in the lethal force component and it is a tinder box. |
I assumed my Real ID was enough. I haven’t gone into DC recently, but if we go to a museum one of these weekends, I’m just bringing my Real ID. I have birth certificates for my kids in my wallet. |
I'm a brown person who lives in DC and it's fine. I carry a copy of my passport, and I've passed by numerous law enforcement and they don't look twice. |
“visible minority”. ?!?!
OMG, grandma would you PLEASE STAY OFF THE INTERNET?!?! |
Yes OP I go to work in DC every day. No one has stopped me or asked for ID. Would not surprise me if they do though. Millions of Hispanic people live and work in DC. And of course they still go. |
Would visiting just the botanic garden be safe and pleasant? |
