I don't get how people are saying they are hiding the abuse. Seems like everyone knows about it.

Everyone knows about it NOW. This was not talked about widely until the Boston Globe broke the story in 2002. However there was lots of talking in the 90s, most of which was ignored or buried.

By 2002 it was impossible to ignore. Even if all abuse cases were brought to light, tried, and the church cleaned house, for me, as a woman, I can never go back to being Catholic since I have no voice or body anonymity.

As much as I found solace in mass and many beliefs, there are things I cannot over look.

Trump might just become the next pope. When Vance turned the screws up on Francis boy, that sent a message to the Vatican: elect Trump to be Grande Papa or face the music —bad, somber music.

You have to be of sound mind to become pope so no.

You also have to be a Cardinal, working your way up the ranks of Catholic clergy, which Trump has not done.

No worries. Trump can mess with the US government, but he can't be Pope.

It's in the forum because it's in the news, no mystery.

Unrelated, but while Sinead O'Connor was right about abuse, her career blew up in part because she has her own mental issues, probably stemming from abuse by her parents (not a clergy member). Series of divorces, kids with tons of different guys (usually they got custody - rare), suicide attempts. Identifying as a lesbian then converting to a strict form of Islam and calling anyone that was not Muslim mentally ill, etc. She blew up her own life.

Possibly. However, religious people keep thinking two things, one is wishful perception that other people's interest in their religion is increasing, other is simultaneous paranoia that negative sentiments about their religion are increasing.

I'm not Catholic nor remotely interested in becoming one (I'm divorced, for starters). But what's with the panic here to deny that people are interested in Catholicism? It would only be natural for something that rises to the top of the news cycle for whatever reason (like, one pope dying and another being chosen) to prompt interest in the thing itself. Too many bigots on DCUM.

I'm a former Catholic, not a bigot and I haven't noticed many on DCUM. I'm very interested in hearing all about the new pope because he's American and seems like a good guy. I think we need more good guys in high places.
