It also depends on the team. The culture in Audit is way different than a Tech team in Card.

A lot of them also have no basis of comparison. It’s the only company they’ve worked for so they don’t know any different.

Serious question. What companies in the DC area have comparable pay and benefits and a better culture? I’ve worked at Capital One and a few other companies and didn’t see a huge difference. Maybe I’m applying to the wrong companies or missing something.

I didn’t have a negative experience at Wells Fargo and their pay/benefits were comparable.

Wells Fargo has a terrible reputation for how they treat employees.

All PPs are right. I worked there for 3 years and due to my shitty personally I was “encouraged” to leave. I joined Carlyle and love it here, high performers are given a lot of responsibility AND resources. OP can take a look at our jobs in DC!

The performance management system is archaic and Rich mandates that 15-20% of associates fail each year. He believes turnover is the key to success. As such, a lot of politics, ass kissing, game playing, and back stabbing in order to survive. I worked there for 4 years and am soooooo glad I left (and much “healthier” now).

+2

Yes, it’s all true. It’s toxic.

Spouse works there. Sadly, all of the above is true. The performance review system is worse than Hunger Games.

Spouse has worked in both banking and card. The culture is very different on each side, so these reviews aren’t helpful unless people tell you where you work. DH is very smart, even in a room of very smart people. He usually gets large bonuses.

My incredibly intelligent super genius and also very cool child worked at capital one and they did not give her a raise of $232,000 dollars so I am filing a class action lawsuit please come to this website to join www.crouton.net

I worked in tech and card and depending what your role is, there is certain level of red tape and harassment you would face. Bonuses really are only meaningful at Director or higher level but they could be doing some layoffs after merger with Discover.

This is very true. Working in banking vs cards vs tech vs audit etc is going to be very different culture and demands. Rising through Tech at any of these organizations is hard and somewhat cut throat.

I don't find Tech at Capone to be very challenging. They hire contractors on a phone call interview and then slowly get them hired as Capone employee. Very bad system.

Is there something about the "culture" requiring people, within a few weeks of starting there, to write a gushing Linkedin post about how awesome the place is and how wonderful and brilliant all their colleagues are? It's pretty excessive because you really can't say such glowing things after just a few weeks, yet I see these posts over and over again.

I think that’s one of the keys to survival there. There’s a core bunch of associates (who never seem to be on the chopping block) that literally post daily on LinkedIn about all of their achievements and how grateful they are to their bosses and Cap One. They also love to post about all of their quasi work-related extra curricula activities. As a previous poster said, it’s the Hunger Games and survival of the fittest.

It’s a great company to work for if you are not a lazy dud.

It's opposite. if you don't have any enthusiasm to work for then stay there.

Constant re-org, insider club.
Discover merger is going to be a beast for them to handle.
