Capital One: Culture

Anonymous
Former colleague suggested I apply to Capital One (she does not work there, but has other friends who do work there). It would be for a technical position, so the role is not in banking, finance, economics, law, marketing, or such like. I have never worked in banking or finance. Instead, I have mostly worked for tech firms, where the tech staff are the core of the organization, so I am nervous about switching industries.

What is their workplace culture ?
How are the tech folks treated relative to other groups ?
How do bonuses really worj (as possibly different from the HR description) ?
Any pros or cons ?

Thanks !

At Capital One ? Because it is definitely not that at my tech company.

C1's bonus structure depends on your role and level, like at most companies.

It is a very tech-centric company, tech employees are treated well and have good career prospects if they perform well. That said, it is a big company and culture/environment does depend on some extent to exactly who you work with and for.

It’s a bizarre place to work. Rich Fairbank is Trump-esqe, demands loyalty, makes all the decision, very cultu.

The performance management system is archaic and Rich mandates that 15-20% of associates fail each year. He believes turnover is the key to success. As such, a lot of politics, ass kissing, game playing, and back stabbing in order to survive. I worked there for 4 years and am soooooo glad I left (and much “healthier” now).

Spouse works there. Sadly, all of the above is true. The performance review system is worse than Hunger Games.

It is a conservative work place and not much growth unless you come at a higher position from starting. As a tech guy, you would see a lot of contractors just doing useless work to get paid.

Low performers are encouraged to leave. High performers can be and often are promoted. It's not a culture of workplace complacency. Those who want to coast along may be better served elsewhere. Those with ambition and who put in the work to contribute can be rewarded.

I believe they do forced stack ranking based on peer reviews. Talk about toxic. I guess if you are one to always rise to the top, be among the fittest, it’s your kind of place.

Don't agree. See a lot of folks in IT and credit card division that are warming seats and barely work.

Not my experience in the 2 departments I work in. No one gets fired/sacked and the department keeps on adding contractors just for the sake of showing higher headcount. I can't hire super talented folks because they would only pay within a range and that's mediocrity is everywhere.

Dog eat dog world. I don't know anyone that has worked there long term. Everyone hates it.

New poster. I know at least a handful of people who worked at Cap One and none of them liked the culture.

Even the ones that have longevity and learned how to “play the game,” don’t like it there but are too invested or scared to leave.
