John Lennon and Yoko Ono

Uh, that's been going on for 50 years.

This. He was an okay artist ( he and the Beatles are hugely overrated in my opinion). I still like some of the music, but John Lennon the man was trash a lot of what he did has been overlooked because of the time he lived, because of his tragic death, and his stans and stans of the Beatles.

You probably think Oasis is better.

Agreed. I always heard that it was Yoko who tried convince everyone that John was most responsible for the great songs. Recent documentary footage shows that it was Paul.

That footage is only from the Let it Be album.

You can’t possibly argue Paul was the one responsible for the great songs when John wrote songs like Strawberry Fields Forever and A Day in the Life (he wrote the slow part and Paul wrote the fast part).

Everyone can have their preferences, but IMO it’s asinine to act like John or Paul were somehow not necessary to the success of that group. Both men have had great and mediocre solo output. Both men would say they needed the other to write those amazing songs.

I have a feeling a lot of the people saying they aren’t big Beatles fans have heard maybe 4-5 songs. Probably Come Together, Get Back, Hey Jude, I want to hold your hand, and let it be.

Unless you’ve sat and listened to the albums—especially after 1964–you really don’t have a leg to stand on.

Put on a pair of good headphones and listen to Rain or She Said She Said (both by John). Then tell me this band is mediocre.

Lots of rockstars (then and now) are garbage humans. Who had sex with underage groupies, did drugs, abused their partners etc. but you still listen to them.

In fact there are probably garbage humans reading this post right now. People are flawed. He was a Beatle for crissakes, no one here is anywhere near talented (and his solo albums were, while different from Paul who always had a more pop/commercial sound, just as good as Paul’s).

He was gunned down on the street by a literal crazy narcissist when he’d finally started calming down, had strengthened his relationship with both Paul and Julian after taking five years “off” to raise Sean and try to be a better dad than he was the first time around (and he knew it). It was an effing tragedy and Double Fantasy (the album that was his last) and Milk and Honey (released posthumously) have tracks that make me cry because of the waste.

And to the OP: yeah there have been rumors for years about their open relationship. Yoko paired him up with May specifically so she controlled who he was with vs someone random. She also claimed she’d never heard of The Beatles when they met (sure). Still she was an artist and a musician in her own right and lazy misogynists like to blame her for the complicated relationship between four men who changed music in SEVEN YEARS (yeah, only seven) and were tired of being around one another.

The Beatles had a significant influence on the music world, but we can let the John Lennon worship cool off now. If you personally keep crying over Double Fantasy, that's your experience.

+1 It's crazy how some posters rabidly defend celebrities.

Not only that, but the Beatles have influenced virtually every band that came after them.

They essentially invented the rock band, the stadium tour, the merchandising contract …

The Beatles defined the contours of the music industry as we know it.

People don’t have to love them, but to call them overrated is just ignorant.

Sure, The Beatles have an unquestionable place in music history. They influenced the sound of popular music. I don't think anyone is rejecting that.

They didn't invent music bands, though they were one of the first big ones in the new genre called rock.

Elvis Presley went on the first stadium tour.

Elvis Presley had a merchandising contract before The Beatles did.

They were the first rock band. Elvis did not form a rock band.

Before the Beatles, bands were primarily one person backed by others. Elvis fit that mold. So did Buddy Holly.

The Beatles were the first musical group where all members contributed to the songwriting and all members were known as equal members of the group.

Elvis also did not go on a stadium tour. The first stadium show was 1965 shea stadium.

The Beatles had the first modern merchandising deal.

Ok, let me specify:

Elvis did play stadiums. But he did not do an extensive stadium TOUR.

He played a 5 date stint.

The Beatles did 3 separate, long stadium tours. They started stadium rock.

Yoko Ono had nothing to do with that. There have always been opinions on this topic.

5-day tour = stadium tour
Let's not now qualify.

Not only is there room for other musical artists in your pantheon of musical greatness, but there are artists who made strides earlier than The Beatles.

Please make a list for us of the songs Elvis wrote. Go ahead, we'll all wait. Elvis and his father were so ignorant they literally refused to shelter their income because they believed the more taxes you paid, the more wealthy you were.

They attempted to buy a huge plot of land in Mississippi and made the seller aware of who the buyer was. Guess how much the seller jacked up the price once he found out which financial geniuses wanted to buy it.

I’m a huge fan of the Beatles and agree that Paul wrote more melodically, but some of John’s songs really stick in my head. I love “Dig a Pony” and “Happiness is a Warm Gun,” for example. Some of George’s songs are great, too.

Julian Lennon said that before and after his parents divorced Paul was more nurturing and caring to him than John was. He said he is tired of the saintly peace-loving image of John, who was physically abusive to Cynthia.

If I never hear the song “Imagine” again it will be too soon.

Easy there. What was I doing except refuting the claims that The Beatles invented rock groups, stadium tours and merchandising contracts?
