Thanks for clarifying. At first I thought I wanted speculation on CH's mental disorders, but this thread made it clear to me that I actually want a book recommendation. I am fascinated by Chelsea Handler. Seems like a good idea to go with the most recent one, in which she'll be her most evolved. But no, I won't start another topic about it

OP the latest book she talks about her life, struggles, and journey to therapy/meditation. The other books are humorous / comedy and not serious at all.

Thank you, that's useful.

She’s broken. She’s documented her childhood and she’s open about her issues. But her false bravado masks insecurity and her faux confidence fuels “Look at me!” behavior for attention and shock value. She’s alone because she’s selfish and incapable of putting a partner before her. It’s a lack of maturity coupled with a lack of real interest in anyone other than herself. The addiction goes hand in hand with the anxiety and depression.

In short: a self-centered know it all pretending to be Uber confident…like most comics.

And I’m a fan who’s seen her shows, read her books, etc. She’s still funny. I just feel sad for her.

I listen to her podcast and she has evolved quite a bit from her earlier E personality / comedy style. She is actually very well read, quite articulate and spends a lot of time encouraging women (call in format) to be more confident. Her guests include other self help gurus like Glennon Doyle and Laura Lynn Jackson.

Well, I disagree that she was pushed as a bill of goods. That's some weird conservative energy right there. From what I can see, she worked hard and is fairly brilliant. As far as who she is, she's one manifistation of our culture, circa 1975ish when she was born (not sure that's correct, but within a couple years ok)

I saw her birth year in her bio as 1975. No way. More like 1965.

Sounds like she was a parenting failure.

I think I posted this before about her, but on her show she said she does not clean up her dog's poop. If you are truly a dog lover, you pick up your dog's poop.

I like some of her stuff, but that one comment stuck with me and affects how I think of her.

Her parents were the failure. Read the book.

I don't like your statement that she is broken because that implies beyond redemption ...
But I agree that she is selfish and emotionally immature. She lacks self-awareness and compassion.

She has always struck me as mean spirited. I also think she seems like she’s constantly seeking validation about her decision to be single and not have kids. It’s fine if she chooses those things, but she goes on and on about what a superior decision it was.

I love Tina fey, and like Amy schumer (though she is also a little blunt for me.) But something about Chelsea handler is really obnoxious and puts me off.

Well, she’s not young.

I think she’s evolved and is a healthier, better person now than what she was in her 20s and 30s, but she’s still demonstrating an inability or unwillingness to change. That’s her right btw. She can be whomever she wants to be. But she seems to have opted to be alone. Like Kathy Griffin. To a lesser extent, like Bill Maher although I think he has a longtime GF (Canadian artist?).

She’s not evil. She’s just likely a difficult person to live with/share a life with.

Then why are so many people in need of therapy and/or medication? Pick another word if you like, but realize there is a reason why people require psychological and medical intervention for years on end while others do not.

She’s insecure about those choices.

Bill Maher is similarly going through some bizarre insecurities related to aging. He’s constantly fixating on age on his show and podcast.
