Penn State and Pitt are equally popular at our school, with more than 20% of the senior class applying to each. Naviance averages:

Penn State 3.66/1150
Pitt 4.06/1281

Pitt is popular a safety for top-ranked kids, which probably accounts for the GPA discrepancy. I don’t think many of those kids are applying to Penn State. But it’s also true that most of those top-ranked kids don’t end up going to Pitt, so I don’t know what conclusions to draw….

It was not a choice school in my opinion, at that time, and kids who went there tended select it over a penn. system school, but not over a main campus PSU admission. That has changed. I agree they it seems Pitt has been on the upward trajectory and PSU the opposite. Pittsburgh as a city is also much improved over the decades. They are both state-related schools and from what I recall and see, do not get that much state funding per undergraduate student, when compared with other states, or even the PA system schools (and as such tuition is high for in state and quite high for a non -resident). My kid did not want a large school and did not apply to either.

Penn (University of Pennsylvania) is not Penn State, nor the state flagship.

Thanks.

Is Penn State not the correct shortish version for Pennsylvania State University/PSU? People say Penn State. I realize I forgot the word "state" in one reference. No snark, curious.

Yes, Penn State = Pennsylvania State University = PSU.

Which business school is better?

They are pretty comparable. Penn State Smeal probably has more name recognition but Pitt has smaller class sizes and affords the opportunity for school year internships in Pittsburgh.

+1

PSU grad here. I would choose Pitt for business school if considering both, now.

Pitt 100% of the time.

Pitt is having a moment. People love it. Definitely hearing a lot of higher scoring kids apply to Pitt and not hearing as much buzz around Penn State.

What is the sports culture at Pitt? Do kids attend many of the football and basketball games? Any other sports popular for students?

Student football section = Panther Pitt
Student basketball section = Oakland Zoo
Mascot = Roc

I believe they all have IG accounts.

Women’s volleyball made Final Four last year - lots of excitement around that.
