is 3.5 GPA BAD?

So a 3.5 with an average level of rigor is presumably going to have somewhat limited options, although there is always some 4 year college option for anyone who wants it and is willing to pay for it.

That GPA, assuming it's UW, does not knock any college out. But if your kid doesn't have anything else to sell, they're not getting into an ivy.

My reading of the original post is that the 3.9 is a weighted GPA. If it's not, and the kid took multiple honors and/or AP courses (the OP said "rigorous" course load) at a DMV public school, that would imply there are several Cs in the transcript -- that poses a barrier to T30 schools if unhooked.

It’s just ok

It is not bad. Plenty of schools In the 50-100 range. More important - is there class rigor in that 3.5?

30+ years ago it would've gotten you into state school with some luck but with all the bonus grade points today it's equivalent to a low B average

you seen the other post? 50% of the Senior Class at a high school in FCPS had over a 4.0

that's not a real gpa

Yup, ridiculous grade inflation! These kids are in for the shock of their lives when they get to college and have to actually do work to get good grades.

3.5 is a solid GPA. Many colleges to choose from. What are the other criteria you are looking for in a school? Test scores? Potential major?

If your a high school or a parent, don't freak out.

People on this forum tend to be mean.

Assuming that this is a weighted average, for a kid taking regular classes at a regular high school: I think the real divide is between super duper stars, kids who tried but sometimes crashed and burned, and kids who really didn't try.

A 3.5 means that the student was trying, turning things and learning. There might be 50 schools that turn up their noses at the student, 150 that may be hard to get into, and about 1,500 that would love to hear from the student.

Nope. Sadly, colleges grade inflate now, too. Lake Wobegon, land of the 4.0s

Over 4.0 means it is the Weighted GPA, so unless the 3.5 OP is referring to is also weighted (not unweighted like most gpas we’re back in the day) you can’t compare them. My son has a 4.5 weighted gpa which is meaningless to me. if you look at his unweighted it is 3.8 or something like that. It is very confusing when you look online and they say the average gpa is xxx…are they talking weighted or unweighted?!
I think there are loads of options out there for you kid OP. Do research on which schools have great programs in your child’s field of interest! So many untapped resources out there these days if people only focus on east coast “name brand” schools. Good luck with your search!

Some high schools have A+ = 4.3 unweighted. It's simply a different scale.

That makes more sense

Ask your school counselor. It totally depends on what 3.5 means at your school, but yes, lots of kids with 3.5UW go to excellent colleges.

I would consider that a form of weighting
