Not NOVA with that GPA, better see a recruiter. No chance at Air Force or Navy, but the Army may be desperate enough

"What is the average GPA for college admission?

While admissions officers base your acceptance on several factors, the average GPA for college admission is around 3.5 - 4.0. However, you may gain acceptance with a lower GPA from a less selective school. For example, while a top college may expect a 3.5 GPA at minimum, a less selective school may want to see at least a 2.0 GPA or a C- average.

Start researching the colleges you’re interested in early and calculate your GPA regularly to determine what grades you need to meet GPA requirements."

Yes, it is now considered a bad GPA at many high schools. There are some, where it is still considered ok.

There are lots of schools that will accept kids with that GPA, but it will not be considered a top school.

Yes, a 3.5 is considered less than good and slightly below avg

OP, it depends on the colleges you are looking at. DCUM is overfocused on top 20 schools and such.

Schools like Tulane and Lafeyette have lower average GPAs according to their Common Data Sets. But, it's hard to know how any particular college has calculated the number they report.

Look outside top 20 schools. Look at T30-T80s and beyond. The higher ranked ones will be reaches, but possible if you have high test scores.

My issue with the above quote from Indeed: GPAs are not standardized and the quoted range is ridiculously limited, as though the only colleges in the US are elite ones. Absurd.

OP, plenty of schools will be happy to take a 3.5. The more rigor in your schedule, and the higher your test scores, the better your chances of admission at higher levels of selectivity. Not top 20 schools, but there are plenty of others. It depends on what you are looking for.

The person would not have to attend community college.

If you are not a troll, share what you are looking for in a college, your test scores, how many APs, your budget, and perhaps people can suggest schools.

My kid has a 3.9 from a FCPA public (with a rigorous course load) and we’ve been told by a private college counselor that knocks many colleges (and I don’t mean ivies) out of reach for him. So a 3.5 with an average level of rigor is presumably going to have somewhat limited options, although there is always some 4 year college option for anyone who wants it and is willing to pay for it.

At my DC’s HS (which is a lot smaller than public), this graduating class 60% had a 3.5 or higher, so 40% had 3.5 or lower. The bottom half are still going to top 100 colleges, as a rule.

Depends on the school. One DC had a 3.1 at a private school with tough grading standards. DC got in to a couple of top 50 colleges. Second DC went to public school. Had a 3.9 unweighted, 4.7 weighted. That was top 10% for that school. Also got in to top 50 (mostly top 25) colleges.

My DC has same average - just barely short of 4.0 weighted. 8 APs. Where is your counselor recommending?

As PPs have said, it means different things at different schools, so no one here can answer that for you. But I think you know that and want get people fired up.
