FCPS comprehensive boundary review

Is she different from previous superintendents? (Genuine question as I'm relatively new to FCPS.)

"During Friday’s meeting, it was clear that advisory committee members are taking their responsibility of representing their communities very seriously. They are passionate, curious, and dedicated to a process that is transparent, includes significant community participation and feedback, and always keeps students at the center of every decision."

Then why is their identity secret?

They now say they will share the list of community members as soon as they consent to making their names public. It’s unclear what they’ll do if members don’t consent - find replacements?

Yes, she’s far more into posting lengthy emails and “weekly reflections” that don’t really say much. Prior superintendents tended to communicate with fewer words while focusing on actual policy issues for the SB to decide.

It feels like she’s trying to bludgeon people into submission with a torrent of meaningless words.

The study was done on 18 year olds in college.

What commutes are longer than 60 minutes in FCPS? Those are apparently the ones being targeted with the upcoming boundary changes.

Didn't anyone teach them that lack of a statistically significant difference is not evidence that there is no difference? I don't trust them with statistics.

The study was apple and oranges. A study involving commute times for college kids doesn’t apply to school age kids.

FCPS, that’s some weak sauce straight out of the gate.

And fcps did a thorough residency check of hayfield football, so this issue surely is with vhsl

Yes.

He was bumbling but didn't like to rock the vote.

No, the last superintendent (Scott Brabrand) was 10000 times worse than her. His emails were long and nonsensical. His town halls were long and nonsensical. He just droned on and on about nothing. He made the worst possible decisions during Covid. He was terrible. Reid is much better. I'm not saying I love her and she's the best, but she's much better than he was.

Did you ever meet or listen to Scott Brabrand, LOL?? The man would not shut up and was dumb as a rock.

Aside from being afraid of frost due to her Texas roots, and getting a shady follow on job for herself from a shady fcps contract, Garza was easily the best of the three.

The only regular complaints we heard about her were snow day related.

This process is taking forever. It needs to be done yesterday, so we can move on.

Yes. It was made very clear that if you do not want your name to be shared, you would not be able to serve on the committee and another name would be drawn.

That is not going to happen. This will end right before the next school board elections. Result will be bad, but the school boards small rabid fan base will vote those not running for other elected offices back in and Reid will get a bonus for the fine job she has done.

The primary study that the school board is using to justify its focus on transportation times showed that there was an increase in accidents after five minutes of commute time.

It also found that commutes of over 60 minutes had less accidents.

Key takeaway from safety perspective: our kids should be on the bus for 5 minutes or less or over an hour.

This was the study that FCPS hand-picked to justify its transportation focus. You can’t make this stuff up.

If they want to redistrict kids to schools that are closer to their homes, they have the authority to do it with or without a third-party study on the purported benefits.

Exactly. At the end of the day, they don't have to justify anything. School boundary lines are man made, just made up. They can shift them a few streets over and provide whatever justification they want.
