So MLS Next is not following the new age group cutoff.

There is MLS Next I and MLS Next II within the MLS Next organization.

I is staying birth year.
II is moving to the new seasonal year.

And to clarify MLS Next calls Tier I “Homegrown” and Tier II “Academy”. Coppermine joining Tier I for 26-27.

Big News: Our Club Accepted into MLS
NEXT Homegrown
From Andrew Bulls

Players, Parents, Coaches, Staff and Community, We are thrilled to announce that our club has been accepted into the MLS NEXT Homegrown Division for boys U13-U19, widely regarded as the highest level of youth soccer in the United States. This milestone will take effect beginning with the Fall 2026-27 season.
Our club will continue to compete in the MLS NEXT
Academy Division, operating as one unified organization across both divisions within our established player development pathway. We wanted our membership to receive this information directly from us upon confirmation.
This milestone represents a significant step forward for the club and reflects the collective efforts and commitment of our players, coaches, leadership, staff, and families.
More information regarding what this means for our teams and overall structure will be shared in the coming days. An official public announcement will also be released on our social media channels soon.
We are proud of the direction our club is heading and look forward to continuing to build together.

As a current member, it is not going down. It is the route for D1 which serves the majority of the MoCo marketplace but I imagine they will no longer dominate the DMV pro placements on the boys side as they once did. The product is not strong enough for their ego and policies to really hi-level talent though (no guesting, tactical too early, anti-DCU, etc., limited flexibility on playing up). These issues only relate to 1-2 kids per age group at max so they will feel the sting there but overall they will keep winning and sending kids D1.

As a parent of younger kids, all seems to be going fine... at least as far as the 1st and 2nd teams go, time will tell I guess.

From where I sit the club has a lock on Montgomery County. The player pool is deep in the county but on the boys side, Achilles and Potomac can't match up and it's too far to go to SYC, Alexandria, Baltimore Armour, Coppermine, etc.

FYI, some pretty damning video was just posted on TikTok of what some think an abusive coach looks like. Footage was posted by a former player now in college. He thinks he has the authority to rip girls apart…

Will be interesting to watch DCUM react since we rarely see video. Wonder how long the former player keeps it up.

DD said it wouldn’t bother her but it might bother others.

Don’t forget that we are also going to get some of the top GFR players because we have 2 coaches that will funnel their best players since GFR doesn’t have a pathway.
