Moved here a year ago with DH and really dislike my job - I was working in a creative function in NYC and am now working for a large govt contractor in the va burbs. I've had a couple of uneventful interviews and realized I pretty much hate anything related to Federal, Government, Military, Defense, etc. Am I doomed in this area? The jobs I see posted make me want to vomit. ![]() |
About the only thing I would suggest is to take a look at the non-profits, although that's still related to government work. I'm not sure why you make it sound as though "creative" is mutually exclusive with the areas you listed though. What exactly is the problem with the jobs, to the extent that a couple of interviews and job postings could lead to this viewpoint? Considering how broad a spectrum those areas cover, there's not enough of a common thread between them for this to make sense. |
What skills do you have?
May I ask why you capitalized everything except for "a" and "but"? |
Um...fuck you? |
Wait, let me be more clear. You hate what I do and you hate what I have dedicated my life to doing - (so much that when you see those types of jobs they make you want to vomit) - yet you'd like help? You realize that most people in the DC area are in federal, goveremental, or military jobs correct? Obviously you aren't skilled at marketing either. |
There are plenty of non-government related jobs. You will need to apply for those jobs and adjust your resume to appeal to the commercial market.
What field are you in? Creative function = marketing, IT? |
It doesn't show up that way for me. I seem to recall that being some issue with how a particular browser renders it or something like that.(Are you using Firefox? I think I saw it with that, but can't remember which version) Either way, it is probably just a display issue on your end. I always just ignored it. |
Wow someone is bitter and insecure. OP did not say she hated you or what you do for a living. Loosen up your tight little asshole. |
+1 |
Have you thought about doing whatever you are doing for a school or a university? These institutions have big admin/business operations even if you aren't interested in/qualified to teach in the classroom. |
How old are you? You seem to have an awfully immature and narrow understanding of the work opportunities that these institutions offer. |
Take a look at technology startups.
There are many in the DC area with creative components, fun cultures and no connection to federal contracting etc. The two big ones that come to mind are Living Social and OPower. For more ideas, try here: http://proudlymadeindc.com/ |
How can you hate every type of job in the government? There are so many different types. |
+1. NP here. Plus, the blanket abuse makes her seem a little psycho. |
OP, how is it possible you don't know how to conduct a job search outside of the govt? Ever heard of monster.com and the rest? That, plus the unfocused rage problem. You sound unemployable! |
