My child attends an elite college. It is overrated.

Why would you crap on a clinical psychologist of all professions?

I dunno. Especially since therapy and assessment are quite common recommendations in many of the other forums.

as a former immigrant (went back to my home country because US is completely insane and in precipitous decline) I will note that this whole college as a brand charade is a very American thing. Americans will spend 99% of their time discussing college culture and brands, and is this particular school exactly as much elite as that one, and then they will spend 1% discussing majors. they will let their kids study garbage and feel they should not say anything about it despite burning through hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Truer words have never been spoken. And, I am born in the USA.

Filthy rich kids can study whatever they want. It's the MC and UMC tiger cubs who foolishly fall victim to this spoiled indulgence. The few striver kids we know who went to Harvard and Yale got caught up in the nonsense layabout vibe of the rich kids on campus and ended up in crummy careers making little money.

To the troll talking about Yale's psychology dept: It's literally #1 in the nation, you dipshit.

So true! Absolutely 100% correct!

I think a lot of it is about the top tier school AND what the persons major is AND the connections they make.

I have a friend who went to Cornell and studied creative writing and is a bartender. I also have a friend who went to Harvard and then MIT and is doing research and making good money. My husband went to a cheap state school and makes the same amount of money as his counterparts who studied finance at elite schools. A lot of how it pays off depends on the field the person is going into.

+ 1 Too many naïve UMC kids don’t realize the family/business connections that the uber rich kids have.

So you have to always look at the School/Major combination.

Business(McIntire) at UVA is much more elite than gender study at Yale or Harvard.
Computer Science at Carnegie Melon is much much more elite than physcholgy at Northweatern or U Chigago or any other top 10 school.

You have to look at the College/Major combination to see if it's truly elite, and furthermore what they are doing right after college.

My friend graduated from Yale art with ton of debt. He has been practically jobless for years and years, and barely got a job as an art teacher at a high school.
So much for eliteness. There are endless cases like this.

It's almost shocking that people here extensively talk about colleges, but not much on the majors and programs itself.

There's higher chance that a CS major at GMU would turn out more elite than a psychology major at UVA.

I think the word "elite" is being used incorrectly above. The posters are really referring to expected earnings by major rather than elite.

If someone says I go to Princeton, I study gender study. Does it sound elite?
I go to Northwestern, I major in dance. Does it sound elite?

Well, the kids from my Ivy who majored in things like Art History could, because they had trust funds and were from generational wealth. The regular kids majored in bio or center and went to med or law school. You keep making this point but it just shows how out of it you are.

And the average starting salary for the #1 according to the data from the department of education = $38,000

You are a hopeless. Read your damn citation, "The median annual earnings of students two years after graduation. Only data from students who received federal financial aid are included in the calculation."

One of the gals we personally know who recently graduated from Yale with a psyc BA has grandparents worth billions of dollars -- obvious rich heirs like her are not included in that calculation. The financial aid kids contributing to that low median salary are almost certainly 24 and 25-year-old master's/PhD students making $20,000 to 30,000 -- and probably a handful of kids in law school. Please stop embarrassing yourself. You're acting as if a psyc BA from Yale is akin to some dipshit drunken sorority girl at Tailgate State degree mill with a BA in psyc.

+100 No talk of majors

Why is everyone being so mean to the OP. Thanks for the reality check. Deep breaths over here as we navigate all this. Good to remember all this.
