Deep Racism Problems at NCS and STA: Questions/Answers we can't get through admissions

You're talking about a school where kids photoshopped black faces onto holocaust corpses in 2019. So yes, I believe these posts are plausible. Good grief.

What was so grotesque and troublesome about this event which happened TWO year ago is:

Not only did the kids do it but they felt confident enough to do it openly at school. Clearly they didn't fear repercussions or expulsion for doing this. They assumed the school would have their back or that it would just be laughed off.
It really shows how intrenched racism is in parts of this school community.

And how entrenched the privilege and elitism is. These boys are literally told on a daily basis how special and better than everyone else they are because they go to STA. This deep culture bleeds over to the parents as well, which is why we hear all to often about how most boys couldn't handle the academics at STA and how STA is the best school and so special, etc, etc. Even the Black at STA Instagram posts address this issue, saying it was "relentlessly promoted" that the boys were the "best of the best" and "better than everyone else" because they were at STA. This narcissism, elitist, and privilege is entrenched in the culture and encouraged. It is the crux of the problem in regards to a majority of issues the schools has been facing.

I really think you've hit on something here. I have a daughter in the upper school at NCS and you don't have this same "you are better than everyone else" culture there. There was none of it in the admissions process and I can't recall any time that my daughter has been told "you're at the best school, you are so privileged to be here" or similar. Life is a fairly quiet slog for these girls and there is very little (to no) recognition of how hard they work. In contrast, my son went on the admissions tour at STA and it was clear from those 60 minutes that the school is relentless in promoting to their boys that they are the "most special boys ever and this experience is the most special experience ever".
It's interesting because I know this bothers some NCS parents who also have kids at STA; they like the self-promotion of STA and wish that NCS had more of it. Frankly they love being told how elite their boys are. However, this sort of self-promotion runs the risk of creating elitism and toxic privilege.

This is very interesting and I think ad a whole men are far more in need of pats on the back then women because culture has created that dynamic. This difference Seems to be played out to the extreme at NCS and StA.

PP, you seem oddly obsessed with this particular school and one wonders why

There are many schools in DC . Apply to a different one perhaps .

You are likely to find more happiness than insisting ( pre-admission of your child no less) that the school become co-Ed, lose its Episcopalian affiliation and values ( all to suit you as they seem to turn you off ) . Stop being so academically challenging ...stop trying to produce well educated, poised and confident young adults because - again you just hate the look of them.

Become co-Ed, stop it with the educated mind/ healthy body thing cause you just hate that too ....sports should be voluntary only and no one should ever have to put on a jacket and tie because -well, because you don’t like it

OR, you could just apply to GDS, Sidwell, Maret and thereby show that you can be respectful of those who may prefer something different than you - except you DON’T respect anyone who doesn’t have same exact preferences as you

Odd that you self style yourself as having an open mind

Well, that was a whole boatload of deflection.

I'm the poster you're replying to and it was my first post in this thread. It's not one poster who is "oddly obsessed" but many posters who have the identical thoughts/observations about STA.

And what are you jabbering on about regards to posters stating that they want to change STA to co-ed and lose it's Episcopalian affiliation? None of this was mentioned in this thread at all. I'd suggest you put down the mid-day drink.

If you're asking a serious question--which you are not--I'll answer it seriously anyway. Admissions needs to do better screening kids and families. Period. Will they catch everything? No. But at least they could try to look at character instead of just money. Sure, though, keep admitting families whose kids have histories of problems like this, who are known bullies. Families whose parents are under active, ongoing ethical investigations. Look for kids whose letters of rec speak to character. Whose records show character. Whose parents aren't under investigation. Many pp's have said this starts with admissions. There are many who agree, for good reason.

+1 except no way all that crazy can be explained by a single mid-day drink. That's years of delusion and possible substance abuse coming out to play today.

Different poster. Sorry but your post is factually incorrect. It was 2.5 years ago to be exact. It was spring of 2018. Yes the boys were expelled but they received a lot of support by parents and kids. Victims received zero support. In fact a few boys put the names of the boys that did this on their helmets to honor them.

Did the school insist they take those off the helmets?

I don’t think they knew. That came out after the fact.

I am a different poster and I so not think STA encourages racism or elitism in the least. I really don’t.

I and many others think where they have failed is by admitting too many families that don’t want diversity or inclusion and who are vocally and publicly against BLM and against DEI and some against LGBTQ openly. So now they are left with a mess which will takes years to clean up after these families graduate from the Close.

There are many wierdly STA-obsessed people on this messageboard that come out of the woodwork on ANY subject concerning STA. Lacrosse, racism, dating, academics, admissions--you name it, there is a group here that has an opinion on absolutely everything about the school...and likely no connection whatsoever to the place.

Actually many of the posters here seem to have a pretty detailed understanding of what’s been going on there the past few years. What I see coming out of the woodwork are numerous sta-obsessed posters who either can’t bear the thought that the school has things to work on or, worse yet, can’t bear the thought of actually working on those things b/c those things are not issues they wish the school to work on.
