Plenty of room to comment without being qualified to judge.

Isn't the school's handling of the situation "representative of Gonzaga" though?

Yes, this is what people are so upset about.

But as an outsider I have no idea who is involved, any background information on those people, how specifically the school handled each case, nor what the future repercussions will be. So I don’t feel at all qualified to judge.

We all know this: The incident happened on Jan 30/ 31 - per the Post article - and nothing was spoken about it within the GZ community (letter sent out to parents) UNTIL the Post story broke/ was about to break on Feb 15.

That, to me, speaks volumes.

Is the property owner pressing charges? Seems the value of the destruction would get in the felony range.

The Catholic Church needs to stop believing it can govern itself..
This is the reason hundreds of people were the victims of sexual abuse for decades. The church/dioceses are not bound to report crimes (and don’t). If school officials know of laws being broken they should be legally and morally obligated to report it, they are not, and they don’t... Keep smiling parents I hope your kids don’t get raped. As long as you defend the cover ups your perpetuating the culture that allows heinous crimes to go unchecked. Vandalism and rape are not on the same stratosphere but the culture in the Catholic Church that they are above the laws of society are exactly the same in both circumstances.

False.

The private property owner of the private property appears to be choosing to settle the matter privately, as is his right, as a private citizen.

The $$$$ to do so must have been ridiculous!

They also avoid the headache of a criminal complaint.

This private property argument is nonsense. No private property owner can give you permission to dump a refrigerator into the Potomac.

Exactly! Had they not come forward, the details would not have seen the light of day for some time, if at all. As it reads, the consequences of these actions have been levied by school leadership, and that is all GZ wants people to know. The leadership invokes privacy and a right to handle their business in accordance with their governance, which is outside the disclosure policies and freedom of information we are more accustomed to or feel is warranted in this case.

If someone or a group of GZ-related alumni/parents/faculty/students want specific answers, or confirmation of proceedings, or a change in leadership, the Board is the pathway. Aligning well-heeled donors - the 6- and 7-figure types - who commit to withholding financial support are critical assets here, too, because that hits the Board and school leadership where it counts. GZ turns 200 in two years- you don't think they're focused on major $$$ right now? Isn't it obvious that $$$ is a main factor here? What if the accused are sons of big-time donors? Staying in the good graces of those who fill the coffers trumps accountability and transparency. Unfortunately, this is GZ's advantage as a result of its organizational structure and governance- everyone but the Board can be ignored.

This has nothing to do with the Catholic Church. Our public school does not report crimes to the police either.

Oh yes, this is ALL about making things easier for the private property owner. These boys are damn lucky that the owner did not file a criminal complaint. I just can't help wondering if the same would have happened if the incident happened with Ballou or Eastern High School boys?

Unfortunately, it is extremely short sighted of Gonzaga to think about alienation of donors in their decision to avoid expulsion. Even if one or two of the boys come from big donor families, keeping them enrolled upsets the rest of the donor base (big and small), including current families, alumni, and teachers.

Do we know no one has been expelled? I have seen nothing about punishments -except that outsiders think there have been none because there was no rush to public announcement. I’m not saying anyone is innocent, but if my kid’s enrollment was on the line, I’d sure as hell want all the facts out and all the witness statements lined up before any punishment was imposed!
