He paid extra for that seat why should he have to give it up? Greyhound in the sky people. You are flying with the unwashed masses, deal with it. |
I can't believe this thread is THIS long and every post isn't "wow, what a nutcase!" She's a nutcase! That's the story. Not the chubby people. |
Are you not reading the posts in this thread? There have been a few examples, that keep getting repeated, where it has been explained that even when an obese person purchases two seats, the airline takes it back because they “overbooked”. I 100% agree that if you cannot fit into your seat that you must purchase a second seat. And people who have not purchased the seat, should not be able to board without securing the extra seat. Assessing someone’s ability to sit in the seat can be done at check-in or in the boarding area. But the airlines cannot then take it back. Until that practice stops - buying an extra seat doesn’t solve the problem. And while this person was horrible, it is the airline’s fault for allowing this couple to board without an extra seat. There is zero way any airline employee missed or underestimated the size of the couple. |
+1 Exactly. Make the couple, who knowingly booked their seats *one seat away from each other, out of necessity* pay for three seats, if not four. They didn't ven want to sit next to ach other! Give me a break. When is enough enough on a freaking airplane? |
BS there have been numerous articles about the shrinking seats. It's enough of a problem that they're considering legislation to address it! |
Family doesn’t fly for free. Reduced, yes but not for free. And they are always seated last. |

My parents book seats like that. If no one sits there, they have extra room. If someone does, they move together and give the window to the 3rd person. |
So United is actually one of the airlines that requires obese passengers to purchase an extra seat if they can not put the arm rests down or encroach on the adjacent seat. The couple clearly didn't purchase additional seats because they were in a 3 seat row. Why didn't United address this at the gate before everyone boarded and follow their own policy?

The dudes who spread their legs like they have an STD probably do have an STD, but that is not my problem. Same iwth them taking the arm rests. Not going to happen. |
Are they morbidly obese? |
And United is the WORST with their seats and legroom. 5'4, 120 lbs. I'm not claiming extreme thinness, but I fit in a seat just fine. I flew from ORD-PHX on an MD-80 and my knees were literally in bottom of the tray table the whole way there and I couldn't put it down. I am *5'4*. Not 6'4. So I believe there's something to the ridiculous size of the seats. That said, it should be simple: 1) Seatbelt extender = extra seat 2) Not putting down armrests/flowing under or over armrest = extra seat 3) Don't make everyone else suffer by taking the seat away when it's actually booked. That couple should have bought the third seat in their row, though. |
On the "My-600-pound Life" show a couple of weeks ago an almost 700-pound woman was flying from Ohio to Texas to see a bariatric surgeon. She was so obese she couldn't walk on her own and was literally carted onto the plane. I was wondering how she would possibly fit in an seat, and it looked like she had all three seats to herself and filled them all up!!
An extreme example, of course, but still. |
Sorry, it's not BS. Here are some vintage airline seats. Do you honestly see a big difference? The "big" difference is in the size of the people - not the size of the seats. If they look spacious to you, it's because the people were smaller. Legroom has decreased, however. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
