The lady was extremely rude. I saw somebody in a similar situation during a flight; the flight attendant very discretely assigned an other seat when she realized that the situation could become source of tension and discomfort. |
+1 As a short adult woman, I think it is amusing when other short woman think they are so thin because they wear size 0-00 & weigh less than average height (& often average weight) woman with much lower BMIs. We are much shorter than average, we should weigh much less than average (& wear smaller clothing sizes than average)! Saying someone under 5’ shouldn’t weigh over 100 lbs may be a bit extreme, though... |
I agree with that. Especially the armrest situation. I’ve gotten yelled at many times when flying with my kids to put the armrest down during take-off and landing but not the same applied when I was sitting next to a very obese person who would not have been able to put the armrest down and was very much spilling into my seat. |
In looking at their Happy New Year photo I can see why the woman was upset. Yes, she was rude and abusive but sitting on a four+ hour flight like that and being squeezed in would be awful. Airlines should charge by the pound! I assume that there wasn't an empty seat she could have moved to. I would have exited the plane rather than suffer like that. |
NP. The two obese people very clearly KNEW they were too big to fit into the seats and so that's why they put the empty seat between them. They are outrageous to expect a paying customer to squash between them.
People that obese also often have trouble wiping their anal area after bowel movements, etc, and so it's also likely that there was a smell involved. Even more reason to not want to be practically sitting under them the whole flight. Outrageous. The airlines are likely bound by anti-discrimination laws, so I think what they need to do is: 1) Start charging by the pound for both luggage and people. Then at least they could 'automatically' allocate people a seat size based on their pounds. Since the weight on board has a direct impact on the costs for the airline, they should be legally allowed to do this. 2) Have a rule whereby if someone is too wide to walk comfortably (e.g. within x seconds) in a narrow tunnel then they either cannot fly or they need to pay some sort of surcharge to be accommodated (e.g. in special rows with more space around and in front of each seat and an exit nearby). They could say that it's for safety reasons, because all passengers need to be able to move down the aisle freely and easily if a quick exit is required in an emergency. It could be a tunnel (without roof) that you need to walk through at the gate before you present your ticket. Kind of like at a cattle ranch. And if you don't fit that day, you can't board. I think both of those ideas, especially implemented simultaneously, should be PC enough to be legally allowed, and they would improve flight comfort dramatically. |

And what happens when there ISN'T another seat? It's standard practice for airlines to overbook every flight now. |
The severely obese person should get bumped if they didn't purchase enough space for their needs. |
Exactly. They can get out and buy 2 seats for the next flight. |
He failed to offer up his aisle seat to her as he squished her uncomfortably between himself and his sweetie. The rude woman fit within the space of her seat, this man and his girlfriend were encroaching on the woman. Nobody in their right mind would want to squeeze between the two of them. They, themselves, did not want to sit next to each other. Why? because they new they couldn't fit next to each other. If you are so big that you are making another passenger's seat unusable, you really should be buying a first class seat or two seats. |

But like some of the PPs have been saying ... what if that person bought two seats for the flight and got one taken away bc of overbooking? Why should they be bumped for trying to be accommodating? |
This is a prime example of making your own problem someone else's. |
That would be the airline's issue to figure out then and not the fault of the passenger. |
+1. They were the worst. #Leeches |
