That there is ZERO timely or courteous service when applying for food stamps or govt assistance. In most cities it is one of the most difficult and degrading processes one can experience soley to get resources to feed your children.

Agreed. I grew up poor and my MIL grew up in post-war Germany, she and I just sneak in our tricks for saving old food when no one else is looking. No one has gotten sick yet, and we've saved a ton of money.

Hard cheese is fine to cut off mold. As the English say - if the mold won't eat our cheese why should we. If soft cheese gets mold you have to throw it out. Spors go all through. People are ridiculous with waste nowadays. Especially the middle class and those who have UMC wealth but middle class values. The rich are more saving.

I sat in the front of all my classes growing up not because I was super eager but because I couldn't read the stupid chalkboard. Glasses were expensive.

We never went to the doctor, something I still find odd. Oh, sinus infection? Did you go to the clinic?

My friends parents thought I was really responsible because I had a job in high school.

My college friends staged an intervention because I worked all the time and never had any money. They thought I was abusing drugs. Really I was paying for meds out of pocket bc insurance was expensive, and I needed to buy books.

All of this. I’m white and I didn’t grow up poor but I also did not grow up rich like the kids and now adults that I’m surrounded by where i live in Bethesda. I’m fortunate that my parents worked hard and made sacrifices for our family, and that I got to go to college (with loans) and post-grad (with loans). At first I didn’t understand why all these people send their kids to private school when we have crazy good public schools, and then I realized it’s (for most people I know, I realize there are exceptions so sorry to generalize) just one way of paving the golden road for these kids. Surround yourself with other rich kids with rich parents and already you’ve built a network where people will just hand you stuff based on your rich people network and social status. Also one of my friends that grew up around here asked me where my family’s vacation home is like, of course everyone has one. She also just couldn’t relate to the fact that I had a job starting at age 13 (not including all the babysittting I did before that) and also worked, not vacationed, during the summers.

I was with you until that part. I do not comprehend that grown adults think anyone hands anyone else stuff.

A lot of people get high paying positions (qualified or not) based on their network and connections.

This. Do you know how many holiday baskets I receive from clients this time of season? And all kinds of swag. I pass almost all of it on (except the cheeses.) It is ridiculous this time of year the things we receive, and don't need. All because of our jobs.

This is total bs. We had ebt in grad school and applied online. I never had to go anywhere.

New poster here: no that is the truth. I just applied to SNAP for the first time - family of 4, husband started his own business. We are paying employees but not making ends meet. It took over a month, multiple phone calls and finally sitting at the department of social services for two hours to finally get my card. And I’m college educated, polite, and proactive.

They also might not be able to buy some food items in bulk because they don't have freezers or even fridges. Also, they may have limited access to ovens, cooking equipment, etc.
