The Social Class Ladders—Labor, Gentry, and Elite

What the best school districts really provide is being among peers who are progressive, tolerant and generous because their parents are educated professionals. In 1996, the most popular kid in my W school was a flamboyantly gay kid with pink hair. Growing up, I watched movies and TV shows where the "cool" kids bullied and ridiculed the "geeks" or other noncool kids, and I never understood why Hollywood insisted on perpetuating this strange lie about how cruel kids are to one another. I lived in a nice, liberal bubble where kids came from professional homes where they were taught to be kind and tolerant. I never saw somebody get beaten or bullied and diversity and differences were celebrated. This is what it means to go to school with kids whose parents are diplomats, NIH scientists and policy makers. That is solid G and far better than some nasty E place like the UES or Greenwich, Conn. where you can't show your face unless you have a home in EAST hampton (god forbid South Hampton only)
