English major here- no student loans. I'm not sure why the OP think English majors are full of student loans that taxpayers have to pay? While everyone picks on us, we are very employable. |
DP. I am a stronger supporter of liberal arts degrees including English and history. But seriously, this exercise in middle English is not helping your argument. You really don't need to be able to read or write a critical analysis in middle english for anything. |
another +1000 |
Not all English degrees involve film studies. As another poster stated, some are easier than others. Clearly you chose an easier one and were even lazy about that. |
And THAT's where the nuanced critical thinking comes through - which your typical STEM person does not possess, exercise, or get. |

Nobody scoffs except ignorant/judgemental grandparents or rude friends. And who cares what they think anyway. |
I was responding a PP who stated that they were an English major and had loans, but hey, at least they get to read great books and do some creative writing. |
DP. The English major is far more succinct and clear than ChatGPT. But putting my critical thinking skills from a good old fashioned liberal arts education to task, I believe ChatGPT came to the same conclusion as the English major. |
Only those focusing on creative writing. |

congrats, but most English majors still need a graduate degree to get paid similarly to a STEM grad. Also, most English majors wouldn't be able to explain a scientific/eng/CS paper using layman terms, either. And STEM grads wouldn't care about having to compare two literary texts. Most aren't interested in it. Even my IBDP grad who is a STEM major didn't like having to do that when they were in IBDP. They called it BS. -dp btw |
Who need to be literate and critical thinkers and be able to see/understand things from various perspectives. I think this thread has encouraged me to encourage my kid to go with their heart and do that English major. |
Nope. Stop randomly making things up |
But they learn to write well by virtue of reading various literature and the various writing assignments they must complete to pass the course. Not everyone gets an "A" on their first college essay or paper, no matter how well they may have done in high school AP Lit. And not all English majors are good at grammar. My sister was an English major but couldn't spell worth crap. And that was in the age of the dinosaur before computers, let alone spellcheck. |
