Schools most harmed and those most benefiting once NIH, DHS funding resumes?

As it is, we also have a $36 trillion dollar deficit that really is not sustainable either. Cuts will have to be made. Deeply and significantly. But these entities were not kind to the rest of America either.

Whatever problems you think existed, going at something with a sledgehammer isn't necessarily going to result in something nicer at the end of the day. For anybody.

NIH lowers allowable indirect costs from 60% to 15%.

Seismic.

Indirect costs pay for the building maintenance, admin salaries, utilities, etc.

Johns Hopkins going to get slaughtered.

Yup. I am at Hopkins. We are in shock.

Hopkins will not get slaughtered. I doubt you are there. Internal contingency planning already underway without alarm.

You are probably not in the sciences and probably don't understand the fact that the email from the provost is trying to sound calm while everyone is in fact very much in a state of panic.

I'm in the BME department. No, not everyone is panicking. This unilateral cut will not play out and will be challenged in short order with negotiations to happen

I hope you are right, because it is too ridiculous to stand, but this bullshit should not have been proposed in the first place.

Same - at a R1 in Virginia. We have already all been on the phone. VP/Director levels in sponsored research.

Is the DOD cutting research funding too?

We send about 100x more fentanyl to Canada than they send to us…again, don’t be a dipshit on these issues.

Thank you could not have said it better. Dipshit is perfect word choice for this occasion

Their new OMB director (Project 2025 fame) is a gradaute of Wheaton.

Wheaton put out a note congratulating him, much like they do for the hundreds of other alumni when they achieve a new career accomplishment.

A protest ensued among the faculty and Wheaton uncogratulated him.

Academia for whatever reason has an extreme bias towards left wing ideology, through its faculty, administration, students, curriculum, culture, etc.

Academia is completely reliant on the federal government.

NSF, DoD, DoEnergy grants are going not going to be spared.

Academia in the entire world is reliant on the federal governments of their countries.

Again, so you can understand…the entire world.

The US is actually less reliant than any other single country in the world.

Dp who works there. Absolutely not true, everyone is shocked and beyond alarmed.

Which is that unless the most recent announcement is walked back due to it's ridiculousness, this is going to disastrous for scientific and medical research in our country. US will definitely no longer be a world leader in this area under these conditions. And no, it's not just going to affect the social sciences like some people seem to think. I work in research we are all stunned and find it surreal to see people celebrating Trump's decisions.

My advice is to calm down. There was a lot of bloat and wasteful research that didn't contribute much. People have illustrated examples on this thread. But you'd rather believe in a different narrative so you pretend otherwise. I also cannot jump to automatically defend higher education because I'm not wild on how certain aspects of research was utilized through higher education, to use as a controversial but increasingly likely example, NIH gave grants to various universities who in turn subbed out the grants to a certain research lab in Wuhan, either directly or indirectly via a certain entity called EcoHealth Alliance. This is indisputable and factual. And I don't doubt we will learn a lot more about this as the new administration is determined to turn over all stones and reveal everything.

No one wants to hear from someone with so little understanding of the issue. Go post this nonsense on Truth Social.

Explain to anyone how the deficit has ever actually impacted your life.

Literally for 40 years people have been claiming the deficit “is not sustainable”.

Ross Perot’s entire 2000 platform was that the deficit in 2000 wasn’t sustainable.

Why do any cuts need to be made now, while they didn’t need to be made 4 years ago or 10 years ago or even need to be made 10 years from now? Why can’t we raise revenue if you care so much about the deficit (which you actually don’t give a shit about BTW).

You do not understand what this does to trade. The US is now the seller of last resort for corn, soybean and pork. This is from Trump's last time in office. Factories are not being built, farm equipment is not selling, people are being let go and everything is on hold.

This is not about the deficit. Trump never talks about the deficit. The country has an infinite time lime. In 100 hundreds years no one will talk about deficits in 2025.

Trump got zilch from Canada and Mexico, they just reiterated commitments they made months ago. Trump fell for it.

You have no clue about the budget. Education (and USAID for that matter) are such a small piece. The real reason for the deficit is the giant tax breaks for the wealthy. Trump makes a show of axing Education and aid, painting them as indoctrination and terrorist funding while he lines his pockets on the tab of the American people via the copious tax breaks that benefit him (and the many violations of emoluments clause).

Government spending has increased faster than any possible level of taxation revenue, idiot. It’s not the “not taxing” it’s the spending. Duh.
