That places your child around the 87-90% percentile. How is that not doing well?

This obsessive tracking of numbers has to stop. I’ve been teaching high school for 20 years and I’m increasingly worried about the pressure students are under.

And guess what? Even the students with “low grades” (defined as Bs) are getting into great schools. And my own daughter, who scored a 1280 on the SAT, got into every school she applied to with merit. Why stress out children out? They will be okay.

People need to relax. This isn’t healthy.

About 1600 kids in a given year (1 in 1000)

That is incorrect. about 16000 are semifinalists, accounting for the top one percent on each state.

The question was about the number of kids who have perfect scores (1520 or SI of 228). The answer is that about 1 in 10 semifinalists belong in that group.

If you look at the tables there are a lot of scores under 1520 that are 99%ile+ (the + is literally in the table). So very very few. My child got 1500 as a Sophomore and said he only knew of one other kid who did better in his grade at a pretty high performing school. Of course that doesn't mean there aren't more, but it's not a ton of kids getting 1520.

I think the higher scores in 10th don't always translate to improvements in 11th because it can be the result of a lucky set. We'll see!
