APS School Board candidates?

Good question. "High expectations" sounds like someone who is good with suspending more special needs and Black students.

And here comes the apologists… what he states on his own website is racist period. Bullying doesn’t happen because of “diversity.”

Be better.

He should move his kids to Tuckahoe or Jamestown where bullying never, ever happens. 🙃

Here is an excerpt of the actual statement found on the website.

I will advocate policies to maximize the benefits of a diverse student population, reduce gaps in education, and minimize the risk of safety issues. I plan to:

Reaffirm high expectations for academic performance and behavior across all cross sections of the student body and put the supports in place for students to live up to those high expectations

Continue fostering the educational approaches that teach emotional intelligence and encourage students to act as caring, compassionate members of society

Ensure that all students have access to resources tailored to their academic needs
Enhance opportunities for parents and students to learn together to strengthen the connection between learning both in and outside of school

Thanks PP. seems perfectly fine to me. The pearl clutching and cries of racism on this thread is…lol.

Yeah, the longer statement is trash. Chen Ling is still a racist. I encourage everyone here to forward his website to everyone you know who cares about APS issues. Most will be shocked, except maybe APE people and fellow Republicans.

Except that's not the excerpt in full as of today (3/4/23). . Here it is in full. I'm surprised he hasn't edited it yet. He must know we're discussing it here by now. Or he's digging in, as he has shown in AEM. Not listening to anyone but himself.

If you don't believe me, it's here: https://www.chen4arlington.org/mission/

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE
Arlington Public Schools has an obligation to educate a generation of children who come from economically and racially diverse backgrounds. The diversity of backgrounds has the potential to enrich the experience for all children. It also creates risks that children will fall behind or face safety risks due to bullying or juvenile behavior. I wouldn't worry too much about Chen Ling. It's really Kathleen's and Zuraya's race to lose. I think whatever message he has will only resonate amongst APE.

I must be racist too because I don’t see what’s wrong with this statement. It sounds like someone who has had first hand experience growing up as an immigrant kid in public schools.

Except on average only about 2,000 people turn out to vote in the caucus. Supporting other candidates on message boards isn't enough, you and all your Arlington friends and neighbors need to actually vote or we could be surprised who walks away with one of the Democratic endorsements.

It sure does make it easier, though.
Bullies find "weaknesses" in others who are similar to them to pick on, or they find differences in those different from them to pick on. Neither are the "cause" of bullying, but they are the targets and the opportunities bullies use to act.

I read his website. I think I understand what he's saying and wouldn't disagree; but the way it's stated on his website is pretty bad. One is far less likely to encounter hate, suspicion, and bullying (and therefore safety concerns) when one is just like everyone else in a homogenous environment v. an environment with different groups (kids of different backgrounds) who don't know each other, don't understand their differences, etc. But he also acknowledges that diversity can be beneficial - and I agree. What he would advocate for regarding diversity is unclear and unfortunately his proposals under that statement are useless and offer no clarification. His statement may be suspect; but if you really read it, it isn't blatantly anti-diversity or racist.

Nope. Many schools in APS, if not the whole district, are majority-minority. He doesn't sound like someone who understands and is prepared to be at the helm of a diverse district at all.

Maybe he should go to a less diverse area where he would feel more comfortable.

No - he's already in north Arlington.

Ok so tell me how increasing diversity leads to more juvenile behavior?

And what does juvenile behavior even mean?
