Actually, around Halloween whooping cough was rampant in the area, but few doctors think to test for it. Most people's immunity has long worn off.

Whooping cough had become an issue for the last 10+ years. Our Dr office is recommending kids in their 20s get the vax every 5 years rather than waiting until 10 (it's Tdap, and typically you only get it after 5 years if you have a tetanus exposure requiring it). Reason why: because "you are the age where you and your friends will start having babies and you don't want to risk giving WC to someone's infant who cannot yet be fully vaxed." Makes sense to me.

We have neighbors whose fully vaxed 13 yo go WC a decade ago (area had an outbreak). They missed 2 months of school and were hospitalized for a few weeks. It was a long recovery and definately not something you would want anyone to experience. This teen had no health issues prior to this, just got unluckily exposed.

Are you worried about a quad-emic? (whooping cough, Covid, Flu, RSV?) Is whooping cough definitely covered in the TDAP vax? Also is it okay to get the new Covid vaccine and the TDAP together?

DP...the "P" in TDAP stands for pertussis, also known as whooping cough.

Same. 2 days of 101+ fever each time. When I had Covid it was only a little worse than that.

But covid is doing long term damage to multiple systems in the body. You can't see it, but it's aging you quickly
https://www.panaccindex.info/p/what-sars-cov-2-does-to-the-body

Novavax is now an option for anyone who has side effects from mRNA vaccines. I had significant side effects from each mRNA, only a sore arm from Novavax and know so many others with a similar experience. Novavax has no mRNA, is protein based just like the other vaccines we've taken all of our lives

Interesting. So one could get Pfizer and then also Novavax? For double protection? Because it protects from two different angles?

Yes Novavax is available to anyone 12+ as a booster now. I have no idea why people keep arguing about mRNA when there is a classic protein based vaccine available that is as effective (and possibly more so) than Pfizer and Moderna

+1

I got the mRNA booster in Sept, because I gave up waiting for Novavax to get approved (pulled the trigger 48 hours before it was finally approved). But thankful we can now get another booster 2 months out, so may get Novavax before xmas. Everyone I know who got Novavax has had less symptoms than with their mRNA, so there is that as well. Based on the scientific data I have read, Novavax is likely more effective than Pfizer or Moderna, at this point. I figure I've had mRNA all the way, it certainly cannot hurt to try a classic protein based vaccine for the next one.

are you going to get vaxxed every 3 months???

No, but have been waiting for 2 years for ability to legally get Novavax (and not have to lie/say never been vaxed). So given how high covid rates are now (and nobody is testing) and how high the wastewater is, I will get a novavax to get me thru the winter season. Had I gotten novavax in Sept, I likely wouldn't get another booster/shot until next fall.

Personally have never had Covid (half my family has not had it either, despite getting PCR tests 4-5 days after start of any illness that could be covid.

Ask your doctor about getting multiple Vaxes at same time. Me personally, I only get one at a time so my body can do it's job and build immunity accordingly (I also have autoimmune diseases so could overreact to any shot).

Tdap has always covered Whooping Cough. From my research, the issue seems to be that going 10 years might be too long for WC coverage, and since it had largely been wiped out in the USA until last decade (thanks anti-vaxers), we largely considered TDap for it's Tetanus purposes.

Similarly, with all the outbreaks of measles in recent years and many adults in their 50/60s getting measles, I personally would get a MMR titer and check your levels for each. Mine are fine (had outbreak in our area 6 years ago and got checked then---kid's HS shut down for 4 days for staff to get checked and re-vaxed if not good, so I figured since I travel a lot it would be smart to get mine checked). Mine is fine because likely because I'm of the age of the late 1980s Measles outbreak on college campuses where we had to get another booster (Attended one of the first 3 campuses with outbreaks and patient 0 on my campus lived in my dorm and was in 3 of my classes supposedly, so I did the smart thing and got an MMR booster).

Great information. I’m going to talk to my doctor and see if I need a booster.

Haven't gotten the covid vaccine since the first 2 shots of pfizer. Don't think I'm getting another mrna booster. Finallly got covid in jan'23 and it was thankfully mild. If people start filling up the hospitals again I would get the novavax. Which pharmacies have it now?

And why should we get this new mumbo-jumbo vaccine?

The new Covid vaccine is not a “booster.” it is actually an updated vaccine. It’s targeted towards newer variants that are very different in make up than the past variants. For the CDC, getting the new Covid vaccine will protect you, but also protect others.

You aren't going to get herd immunity with 14%. You aren't going to get herd immunity if you put pressure on COVID to avoid the vaccine.

Got any data to back that up?

There's no herd immunity with covid. Neither the vaccine nor infection provides sterilizing immunity. That was known early on, but kept being brought up to encourage vaccination.

a) the “new” vaccine is based on a variant that is no longet circulating. there is little evidence to show it is better than the original
b) the “new” vaccine wanes quickly and does not meaningfully prevent transmission, so it does not “protect others”
c) as far as I am aware, there is no research analyzing how well the “new” vaccine protects you based on real-world conditions: comparing the “new vaccine” to people with only the “old” vax and a past covid infection, categorized by age, gender & risk.
