Heavy Movies that Change You

Anonymous
I have liked, loved many “heavy” themed movies throughout the years, but I can honestly say none changed me or my views (philosophical/political).

I can say some provided some knowledge about things I didn’t know before or didn’t know well.

This documentary is the reason I first got Netflix years ago. Someone told me to watch it but I had no idea what was coming. It was like a punch to the gut.

Another vote for Blue Valentine
Winter's Bone

More recently, Buy Now on Netflix makes me want to cancel Amazon and never buy another piece of new clothing

This is an old one but The Mission, from 1986, is an amazing movie. DeNiro, Jeremy Irons, Liam Neeson, an amazing soundtrack and jaw dropping scenery/cinematography.

Arrival's meditation on grief made me think a lot.

I saw an oldie from 1948 called "The Snake Pit" about a woman in a mental institution.with Olivia DeHavilland. Haunting psychological thriller. Oooo...

+1

I thought her decision at the end was really thought provoking. It really made me think about what I would do in that situation.

The Lives of Others. I don't know what it is about this film but OMG. I was so impacted by it.

A Room with A View - Epic. It's a romance but I thought of it as more of a why it's so important to be true to yourself. They just don't make movies like this anymore!

Interstellar. Not that it's heavy but there's a lot packed into it. You can rewatch that movie and learn something from it each time. My teens will drop everything and watch it - it's the one movie they both love - opposite genders with totally different interests.

OG Splendor In the Grass with Natalie and Warren. OMG, epic. Based on Wordsworth poem: Though nothing can bring back the hour of splendor in the grass, glory in the flower, we will grieve not; rather find strength in what remains behind.

Roman Holiday - not heavy but it's very effective about duty and sacrifice

Such are what a truly great movie will do, across all genres.

It's just that we don't really make em that great anymore these days

Million Dollar Baby. All Quiet of the Western Front. Schindler's List. Etc.

If you go through Oscar nominated movies esp from the 70s/80s. I mean pretty much any of them will impact you, just find your genre!
