Ok but surely one of their cell phones would be working if they were on the surface. |
Ummm I don't think there are any cell phone towers in the middle of the North Atlantic |
Ha fair enough! I was just assuming that surely someone had some sort of advanced communications system or satellite phone. If I was a billionaire in the middle of the ocean, I'd certainly like one. |
"Why not"? I guess we could link to literally every single article already linked in this thread, but something tells me that you'd still be lost. |
Why should it stop? These people spent their own money and went in voluntarily having assessed the risks and resolved them to their satisfaction. Presumably, with the kind of money the spent on a frolic, they were pretty sophisticated. If it turns out they guessed wrong, that’s on them. People have a right to decide things for themselves. |
I'd guess that the passengers would assume the submarine and pilot are equipped with the necessary communication devices. And I'd hope that they'd be right! But the whole thing seems ill-advised, so who knows. |
Your assuming that the passengers are still conscious, which may well not be the case. |
The bolded seems to suggest that "this kind of tourism should stop" simply because it requires great wealth to participate. Tourism should only be allowed if it is "accessible." Do I have that right? |
Sure, but now three countries (US, Canada and France) are all spending a lot of tax-payer money to rescue them and at least three, are not citizens of those countries. |
Keep up the extreme tourism if people want, but no public funds should be spent on rescue missions. We have children and adults in this country that do not have enough food to eat, yet we instead divert funds to the Coast Guard to spend money on rescuing these idiots. |

My two cents given they've lost all comms and location? Structural failure or accident leading to one (there is another story circulating about one of these a few years back. Strong currents blew the submersible under the Titanic's stern and they almost couldn't get out) and the thing imploded.
I hope I'm wrong but I can't see how I am. |
Given that the pilot uses a playstation controller, I think it was pretty clear from the start that the pilot isn’t equipped with any necessary or high tech devices. |
Look, I think this a foolish enterprise. I don't understand the need for people to do it. But you should not have to have citizenship in order to expect a little bit of humanit. We try to rescue people b/c it is the right thing to do. Period. |
No, they don’t like that if there is trouble, a lot of effort by someone other than the company who books these tours is needed to stage a search and rescue/recovery. I dont have an opinion either way. |
