Are TJ college admissions a mess this year?

Outcomes can be college outcomes, Average scores or anything else with objective measures. If there is an objective determination of “less toxicity” then let us measure that as well.

Average scores will go down slightly because the old process overselected for test-taking ability (which is very different from intelligence or content area knowledge in an environment where boutique prep is ubiquitous). It pretty much goes without saying that if you remove a metric from a selection process, that metric will decline. Doesn't mean the caliber of students is declining unless you have a myopic view that student quality can be captured adequately by standardized exams in a vacuum.

College admissions will go up because of the increased emphasis on socioeconomic diversity that is taking place at elite colleges around America, which they have determined is good for business. Fewer TJ students look the same on paper, and as a consequence you'll see more of them filling the different types of spaces that are available at these elite schools.

How does the above explain the recent decision by multiple well known colleges to reinstate SATs as a required part of a college application?

Well, for one thing, they’re not looking at exams in a vacuum to where there’s a hard cutoff. I would be willing to be it’s not one of the top 3-5 things they’re looking at. But they’ve decided it’s a valuable data point that’s worth getting back to as part of the overall narrative and there isn’t anything wrong with that.

It becomes a problem when you see privilege warriors start to compare SAT scores of admitted students across racial lines when forgetting that, for students of higher income levels and those of certain demographics, it’s more likely that exam scores are the strongest part of the application.

This is certainly not right.

I wouldn't be surprised. The new admission process has resulted in higher caliber of student.

They’re not seniors yet. It’ll be interesting to see what happens next year.

My DC has a GPA of 4.1 W at TJ. He is not shooting for T20, but hoping to get into big state schools like ASU, Minnesota, U Washington (Not CS)

Reasonable?

Yes. very likely to get in as many TJ students do not apply there.

Thats what I am thinking too.

Not sure why other parents are so worked up. So wanted to see if my assumption was wrong.

ASU, Minnesota etc are awesome STEM schools. So we will be happy if he gets into any of these schools.

I cannot imagine paying out of state tuition for undergrad at ASU - party school and not much else 😬.

DC wants to head out of Virginia/DMV.

And thanks to stock market 529 investments we can afford OOS full pay.

And fyi: ASU is ranked higher than UVA in electrical engineering (36 vs 37) and industrial engineering (19 vs 46)

and yeah .. party school is a plus!

PP is correct. Schools like ASU, Minnesota are ranked higher and provide a much superior stem experience than UVA. Plus jobs prospects are better!

There was a whole court case and developed record that showed this to be false.

That showed what to be false?

ASU has a 90% acceptance rate. We applied just before pulling into the McDonald's drive-thru, and by the time we drove out of the parking lot, we had already received our acceptance. Didnt want to be in that unfortunate 10%, and it was one nerve wracking drive-thru experience.
