TJ College Admissions Results

The Governor doesn’t tell the universities what to do. They appoint boards.

Don’t blame Northam for anything happening at VT.

have you seen the student body? My DS initially wanted to go there.. #1 choice, but after seeing the student body and social life (or lack thereof), DS decided against it. Obviously, CMU is tops for CS, but DS was also looking for a decent social life, too.

What I hear is that only five kids got it to MIT this year which is very low. Virginia Tech was also low again as it has been for several years ever since the Northam administration ordered Virginia Tech to stop taking so many middle income and upper income kids from Northern Virginia.

The word is that Purdue, Pitt and (thankfully) the University of Chicago are filling the void and have been aggressively admitting TJ kids.

UChicago in particular has been regularly admitting 12 to 15 TJ kids every year. Dartmouth and Princeton now admit almost no TJ kids anymore - down from 15 to 20 at Dartmouth and 10-12 at Princeton a decade ago.

The Ivy leagues have been prioritizing admitting first generation college students and deemphasing high test score/academics.

They are still taking TJ kids, but a higher percentage of them are legacy students as opposed to high-achieving middle class kids with college-educated parents.

Is this true? I thought this year’s general admissions results overall is similar to last year, and last year about 50 or so kids went to T-20s?

Yes this is basically how my kid and their (very high stats) friends feel about the college acceptance results this year. Parents are a little disappointed given how hard these kids had worked but most kids are fine and happy.

These kids will be fine wherever they go. They have a great foundation.

How is CMU sexiest? For CS the male-female ratio is almost 50-50.

Is that possible? Haven't heard a single high school gets so many acceptances.

This. Don't fret about where they get in. TJ lays a very strong foundation for success in college. My TJ kid (not one of the geniuses and struggled at TJ) has maintained an A average through sophomore year at a rigorous/competitive CS program. He readily acknowledges that there are a ton of non-TJ kids in his program who are way smarter than him but TJ has taught him to outwork everyone else...

About 8 or 9 from TJ enroll at MIT every year so this is about right and consistent with previous years.

They used to have more than 20 MIT a year acceptances years ago when Asians were less than majority and thus avoid racial discrimination.

Now that decision day is almost here, does anyone have accurate information on TJ admissions results for T20/T25?

I don't think anybody knows until first week in June! Doesn't look too good so far.
