Joy of Motion or Ballet Petite?

Thoughts on the strengths/weaknesses of the two programs (for kids in elementary and middle schools)?

It's better to go with older kids oriented school--e.g. Washignton ballet.

I have one daughter at Washington Ballet, but the other is not as serious about ballet and wants to try to different dance styles. Any recommendations for her? She has done one class at JOM, but I don't think the teacher was very good.

How serious is Washington Ballet? Can kids join later, say, when they are 7?

Yes, although they may be placed for a year at least in pre-ballet with kids who are a couple of years younger.

Most children have to audition for the washington ballet. I would say it is one of the more serious schools in the area. If your child isn't as serious, I think Ballet Petite is a great option. most of the teachers are really good, and it is a really fun atmosphere for kids. I don't have any experience with joy of motion so I can't really comment there...

Ballet petite has nothing to do with teaching actual dance, especially for kids 4 and up. Wash. Ballet is great!

JOM ballet class was a joke. I studied ballet for 20 yrs and pulled my 9 yo out after one semester. They had them trying difficult leaps without even teaching basics and it was a beginner class.

NP here. What is the audition process at Washington Ballet, and how competitive is it? DD is five and has gone for a year to Ballet Petite, and she loves ballet, so I'd love for her to get really good instruction, but I have no idea if she would be good enough to pass an audition.

19:56 here--thank you! Usually I always search first; don't know why I didn't this time, LOL. Thanks!

21:00- I think you mean Ballet Petite doesn't teach much dance to those 4 and under. As a former dancer who sends my 7 year old to ballet petite, she is definitely learning age appropriate technique. It may also partially depend on what teacher the kids have, some are better than others at teaching the "older" kid classes

Maryland Youth Ballet is a great option if Silver Spring is convenient for you.

Ballet Petite is a "child's play"...Good for tots, not for 5 and up. no experience with JOM

I think ballet petite is just fine for over 5 for a recreational dancer. My 6 year old has fun and seems to be learning a lot!
