Washington School of Ballet auditions

What are they looking for in 5-7 year olds? Actual technique or musicality, ability to follow instructions, body type, etc? My daughter has been in a creative movement/dance class for a couple of years. They've learned a couple of positions but only very vaguely. Also, is the audition stressful at this age, or do the kids treat it as just another activity?

(I am by no means determined that she become a ballerina, but we can walk to WSB from our house, which makes it a winner in my book.)

I think the audition at that age is mostly to determine the proper class placement for the child based on her abilities. The audition is brief and is in small groups. There is a lot of waiting, so I recommend bringing books or activities for BOTH of you to pass the time.

OP reporting back. The audition was in groups of 20 and took about half an hour. It was a long wait if you didn't make it into the first group, so get there early to collect your number. DD reported that the audition itself was fun. Still have no idea what they are looking for, but she was accepted.

I think they're looking for all of the things you mentioned, although not much "technique" would be expected of a 5-year-old! Potential would be assessed, instead.

It's not easy for girls to get a spot. (Unfortunately, only one of the other girls we know who auditioned along with our child got a spot.) Our child has been there for a few years, and the ballet education is absolutely first-rate. Best of all, our child is still loves class, rehearsal, and performances. It's serious ballet instruction that ramps up in intensity pretty quickly, but somehow they make it very fun. The instructors are terrific, and the institution (school + company) incredibly well-run. Congrats to your child, and enjoy!
