| Looking for some input about the island. We are interested in staying with a set of grandparents for a week or so at the end of Sept. Are there parts of it that are better than others for kids? We have three boys, 4, 7 and 9 who love the beach and their favorite way to spend time with their grandpa is to go fishing..real fishing-not off a dock. Bike riding, hiking, shopping-upscale if possible-my mom-and dog friendly. Would love some suggestions. TIA |
| I love nantucket. As far as which part of the island to stay, I think that is just preference. I personally like the Quidnet area, polpis area and Siasconcet. There are a couple places you can rent bikes downtown. There is a less expensive place to rent bikes on Surfside road. Sorry, i don't know anything about fishing. There are many trails in the middle of the island for hiking. We usually enter the trails off of Polpis road between Quident road and Siasconcet. Be careful about deer ticks. Lymes disease is a problem on the island. Most of the shopping there is upscale. You can walk the entire downtown in a day , but there will be plenty of shopping. You probably want to decide if you prefer to stay downtown with all the cute shops and restaurants that you can walk to and then you can drive out to the beaches. Or would you rather stay out near the beach where it is more quiet and then drive into town for dinner, shopping etc.. IT's such a beautiful place and super family friendly. You will love it! |
| thanks! I think we would prefer a quiet location near the beach and head into town for dinner. What is the best strategy for nailing down a rental? |

It's harder to find a good rental at this point in the year. There are plenty of places available, but the good ones are taken. but you can still find a place and the island is awesome! and if you ever want to go back then book by January. You can always try VRBO.. I would search the areas I mentioned in the previous post. However, it is probably best to engage a broker at this point and just tell him what you are looking for and he can tell you what is available. I would try nantucket real estate, congdon and coleman and jpfco. We worked with a person from each place until we found the house we liked. We have stayed at this house a couple of times and really like it
http://173.162.240.233/barefoot/vre/hr6703/rpt/0/picturesheet_i.asp?CO=hr6703&strIDs=15868 It would be a good layout for you because the upstairs suite would be perfect and private for grandparents and the downstairs bedrooms would be great for you and the kids. I like Quidnet because there is beautiful Sesechacha pond nearby with great views of the sankaty light house and you can bike to Sconcet for an activity. It's a beautiful and quiet part of the island. There are many other beautiful areas though. |
| How is your 7 and 9 year old going to stay out of school for an entire week at the end of September? Is that really a good idea. |
| this is 17:21 and 19:46 again. I just noticed that you are going in september. You will have no trouble finding a great place then. The weather is perfect in September and the island is quiet. It's a great time to go. |
wow-sorry, I meant end of August through Labor Day-really appreciate your input--my parents need to be in Europe in Aug but they aren't sure of the dates yet...we hope their schedule will tighten up this week and we can finally book something. |
bored? |
Maybe they are home-schooled. Maybe they are in a year-round school with a modified schedule. Maybe two days of the week are teacher workdays so they're not really missing anything. Who knows. Why do you get to question it? |
I am sure you are far too busy to parent someone else's kid. As my son's hockey coach says, one week missed won't make you dumb and one week extra won't make you smarter. Let it go. |
So says the hockey coach who probably wants the kids available to go off to games. What about the teacher who gets the call to prepare the school work and send it home early, explain the notes the kid copied from a friend but now doesn't understand, and then write a new test to give in place of the one everyone else already took because God forbid we don't let him make it up. One week might not make you dumb or smart, but it's pretty inconsiderate if you want accommodations. |
Wow. All this vitriol because the Op made a typo. She already came back and said she meant August. Op, the last week in August is pretty crowded, although not quite as bad as mid august since some schools start before labor day. I would call a couple of realtors and talk to them about what you are looking for and see what's available. You may not have tons of choices. And really anywhere on nantucket is going to be lovely. I actually like the town. |
