| Do they work? Are they safe? I am having such difficulty getting my eating under control, and I feel like I have hit a wall in terms of my weight loss (I need to drop about 30 pounds). I was thinking of trying an appetite suppressant just temporarily, to help me get on track. If you've had experience with them, please let me know if they worked, and if there were any side effects. Thanks in advance. |
| I've seen my MD and been prescribed phentermine. It totally works. Not just at controlling your appetite but making your brain think that nothing sounds even good to eat. I did have to have some labwork and tests done before she would prescribe it. No way I would just buy it from some online pharmacy from like Canada or something. Once, several years ago, I did the Metabolife thing before it was taken off the market and it made me paranoid. I've not tried anything OTC since. |
| I've tried the good old ephedra/caffiene stack. It worked while I took it, but I got tired of the vague sense of nausea. It also made my wee stink terribly, no matter how much I drank. The only reliable appetite supressant I found that I could live long term with was dropping sugar and simple carbs from my diet. Felt like crap for two days, cravings went away after four, and after nine weeks I'd lost a solid 25 lbs. Best part was losing the urge to nap at all hours. |
Wow! So, sugars & simple carbs...what would that include? And what did you eat instead? |

Well, yesterday I had a nice big omelette for breakfast, I was on the run with the kids so ended up having a McDouble without the bun for lunch, when I got home I had steam-in-bag brussel sprouts with butter sauce for snack, 12 oz of chicken thighs baked with homemade spaghetti sauce and steamed broccoli for dinner, then two squares of lindt 85% dark chocolate for dessert.
When I feel like it, I eat brown rice, lentils, or beans, but it's become pretty rare, and I pay attention to serving size when I do. I don't really count carbs, but I look at the labels. If something has flour or sugar as the first couple ingredients, I steer clear. |
| I agree that if you start eating less processed foods you lose the craving for sugary high calorie stuff. |
This has been my experience too. I just have a really hard time toughing out the first 3-4 days. My cravings usually overwhelm me. Also if I have any alcohol whatsoever, my evening willpower departs and I stuff myself with cereal or whatever is around. Agree though that if you can last the first 3 days of no sugar no carbs, your cravings will go away and you will even feel indifferent or repulsed by heavy or too sweet food. GL |
