Wizards and Caps could be moving to Potomac Yard

There isn't going to be a new arena. They will update the current one.

I haven't been there in close to twenty years but I remember it being very cramped and kinda dumpy compared to Nationals Park. I don't know what it's like now.

Truth. So is the rest of council who have been slowly backing off after looking like fools at the press conference.

Sad day for Alexandria. Can’t wait for more affordable housing to take the space that quickly deteriorates and has tenants who could not care less about the units. Just look at the windows of “The Station at Potomac Yard Apartments” or the affordable units in any other building.

It's frustrating what a disappointment Potomac Yard has been... I'm sitting in it as I type this and been around the area nearly 20 years.

For the casino project? Not an arena. Ted is reportedly groveling back to DC.

Turns out that the Tysons casino “deal” offered to Monumental was being pushed by the longtime political consultant to the principled Sen. Lucas.

NIMBYs win again.

The outcome here is terrific for DC and the entire DMV, despite the mistakes along the way.

Happy to admit my pessimism about this outcome being possible was completely wrong — I really didn’t want the teams to move from D.C. but expected Leonsis and Youngkin to be able to make it happen. Amazing to see how much leverage Leonsis lost so quickly. Wonder if agents for potential players who might sign with the Caps or Wizards will take note…

They don’t want or need a new arena. They’re getting a half-billion dollars in improvements to the current one.

Good. Let DC taxpayers keep the burden of both teams and the aging hulk of Capital One Arena. Glad the burden isn’t shifting to VA.

+1

Glad I don’t need to pay for a billionaire’s venture.

This is a fun read: https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20240327931613/en/JBG-SMITH-Releases-Statement-on-Potomac-Yard-Entertainment-District-Proposal

“the opportunity was derailed largely due to partisan politics and, most troubling, the influence of special interests”

Apparently it’s lost on them that the “opportunity” was a special interest to begin with.

This reads like a bunch of deflecting from JBG. They were not interests in being transparent with the community/city/neighborhood. Also, as if JBG itself doesn't have influence of special interests?! LOLOL
