Bellevue serves a population that is largely not white. If I worked there and there were rumors about me being a racist or a white supremacist or someone who endangers black people, or there were calls for my treatment of people of color as patients to be investigated, even if I knew these claims were false, I would definitely worry it would impact may ability treat patients, make them feel comfortable, etc. These are essential parts of the PA's job, and the people spreading lies about her online, using her full name, could actually be destroying the trust that might otherwise exist between the PA and her patients. It's easy to say "oh just don't worry about those people think" when your job does not involve daily interaction with the general public in a capacity that requires trust and honest communication. |
That would be great! The internet mob is pathetic, but I don't see what you can do when there is so much anonymity on the web, especially if you take basic precautions. |
Most black people haven't been killed by police either. But, you knew that. |
And you still are. |
Eh, they will forget her name next week. Most people even on here are just calling her the PA. I'm not minimizing the effect this is having on her, I just don't think long term reputational harm from her patients isn't a big concern. The suckers who fell for this scam will be on to the next outrage in a few days and the PA, whatever her name is, will be forgotten. As it is they think her name is Karen. |
Sometimes the racism is institutionalize or part of the system, though, and not in the hearts of the people involved. Some people are saying that even if the PA felt genuinely threatened and was not stealing the bike, she still shouldn't have called for help because it put the young men at risk of being harmed by police or bystanders who might "help" but shooting or beating up these black men. In other words, even if the PA's intentions were honest and not racist, she is supposed to suppress an instinct to call for help (even if she thinks she needs it!) because racist cops or others might use her plea for help as an excuse to commit racist acts of violence. Do you see the challenge this poses for someone in the PA's situation? She is suddenly responsible for anything racist that a person might do premised on her behavior, EVEN if her behavior has nothing to do with race and she genuinely feels she needs help or is being made justifiably uncomfortable by the harassment these guys were engaged in. Like the conclusion people are drawing is "A lot of cops are racist and black men are often the victims of racist violence, therefore a white woman must suppress her distress at being harassed to protect the people harassing her from racist violence." It's making this woman responsible for the entire system. It won't work. You have to hold the people actually committing acts of racism accountable. |
DP. I appreciate your passion, but it's misplaced. Where did the racism lie in this incident? Was it that a white woman was just trying to go home after a 12-hour shift on the bike she had rented? Was it that she called for help after having the bike she was sitting on forcibly reduced beneath her? Are you truly arguing that a pregnant woman should just give up a bike she had rented and slink off silently when challenged by four guys? Because that sounds like you're a misogynist. Another part of your screed that doesn't make sense: how can you yourself be a "former racist" if, as you claim, there's never a circumstance where there's no racism involved? |
I've gone out of my way not to use her name (though I now know it) because I thinks he deserves privacy and to not have her name associated with is even in any Google search that might lead to this conversation. I also don't want to reward the people who doxxed her by using the info they revealed. That said, I honestly have no idea if other people are familiar with her name or not, or whether the people most likely to be patients at Bellevue would recognize it. I imagine a defamation case might explore that, but I'm just saying that it's worth it to acknowledge that the PA's reputation is actually of some actual value in her profession and it does matter if it is destroyed by malicious lies. |
Central Park racist Amy Cooper rightfully hasn't been forgotten. What makes you think this woman, who has unfairly been branded a Karen, will quickly be forgotten? |
Bingo |
This lawsuit would financially impact some of the worst offenders in this particular incident. It might de-platform some of them. This would send a message to anybody else tempted to go berserk with internet libel. |
I love threads like this. It shows how gullible Democrats are. |
You are still a racist. |
Actually, more white people have been killed by police. https://www.statista.com/statistics/585152/people-shot-to-death-by-us-police-by-race/ |
Because the two situations are nothing alike and most people recognize the PA is the victim. What would be righteous about remembering the PAs name when she did nothing wrong? |
