Physicians Assistant yelling “HELP ME” while stealing a CitiBike ?

I do think she will be able to work again, for the same hospital even.

But I also think that for a long time, she will wonder to herself if any patient or colleague she encounters believes her to be a racist and a thief. And she'll never know if someone is responding to her on the basis of her actual actions, or based on a belief of who she is based on lies that were posted about her online.

Reputation is tricky like that. I do think the people who spread lies and misinformation in ways that damaged this woman's reputation unfairly should be held responsible. It should not be considered a small thing to do this because it can damage a person for a long time.

Well, she can rest assured that those are uneducated morons who get their news from Twitter blowhards like Monique Judge. They are uninformed people whose opinions she shouldn't worry about. Plus, if they are in the hospital they probably have bigger fish to fry than worry about the reputation of the person caring for them at the moment.

Bellevue serves a population that is largely not white. If I worked there and there were rumors about me being a racist or a white supremacist or someone who endangers black people, or there were calls for my treatment of people of color as patients to be investigated, even if I knew these claims were false, I would definitely worry it would impact may ability treat patients, make them feel comfortable, etc. These are essential parts of the PA's job, and the people spreading lies about her online, using her full name, could actually be destroying the trust that might otherwise exist between the PA and her patients.

It's easy to say "oh just don't worry about those people think" when your job does not involve daily interaction with the general public in a capacity that requires trust and honest communication.

Oh, good grief -- isn't there enough evidence of wrong doing? Just STOP.

Please let's not start creating conspiracy theories in this case, because all that will do is detract from the facts.

Bringing conspiracy theories into play will ensure that the whole thing becomes a complete circus, and she'll never get justice.

As if you or anyone else on this thread is doing anything that would contribute to the PA getting justice (whatever that is).

People like PP keeping the drum beat going are the reason why the fundraiser is over $111,000. Financial justice. And the Twitter morons are outraged by this. They can't stand the fact that the PA had the audacity to cry for help in the face of harassment and now she's getting paid. They consider crying for help, weaponizing her whiteness, as if she had any other weapons at her disposal. If people don't want women to "weaponize" themselves in self defense, then would be harassers and abusers should consider just leaving them alone so that they don't have to.

BS like this happens all the time. Most people don't go around suing people whenever they get into an argument. It's just not worth it. And nobody is reading DCUM and donating money because something rubbed them the wrong way. They are idiots if they do.

Do you actually think that you're helping her case?

DP

This was recorded and posted on the internet. The woman had to go into hiding. This is not someone getting “rubbed the wrong way.” This is someone’s life getting ruined. I know you don’t GAF, but I do.

DP. People get death threats all the time on the internet.

It's a huge stretch to say that her life is ruined and she has to go into hiding.

Lol? It’s not a stretch, it’s a fact. Her lawyer has disclosed she left her home due to the harm caused by this incident and the media reporting on it.

Leaving your home temporarily doesn't equal your life being ruined. That is dramatic to the extreme. I'm sure she's stressed out, no doubt. Having your arms and legs blown off in combat would ruin your life. Looking bad in a video, not exactly.

You’re…not bright. And an a$$hole to boot. Well done!

Too bad you are a spoiled American who has never experienced any type of adversity. If you did, you would accept this incident for what it actually is.

What this incident is, is the beginning of accountability for online pitchfork mobs. It's not just a woman versus four men--it's anybody who's had their reputation trashed by false accusations across the internet. We all knew the online mobs would be held accountable at some point, it was just a question of when. This case, where right and wrong now seem pretty cut and dried, is a great opportunity.

And if this incident gets people to start questioning the Karen slur, that's a great outcome too.

That would be great! The internet mob is pathetic, but I don't see what you can do when there is so much anonymity on the web, especially if you take basic precautions.

She wasn’t murdered by a police officer, so she’s still way ahead of most Black people.

Most black people haven't been killed by police either. But, you knew that.

Eh, they will forget her name next week. Most people even on here are just calling her the PA. I'm not minimizing the effect this is having on her, I just don't think long term reputational harm from her patients isn't a big concern. The suckers who fell for this scam will be on to the next outrage in a few days and the PA, whatever her name is, will be forgotten. As it is they think her name is Karen.

Sometimes the racism is institutionalize or part of the system, though, and not in the hearts of the people involved.

Some people are saying that even if the PA felt genuinely threatened and was not stealing the bike, she still shouldn't have called for help because it put the young men at risk of being harmed by police or bystanders who might "help" but shooting or beating up these black men.

In other words, even if the PA's intentions were honest and not racist, she is supposed to suppress an instinct to call for help (even if she thinks she needs it!) because racist cops or others might use her plea for help as an excuse to commit racist acts of violence.

Do you see the challenge this poses for someone in the PA's situation? She is suddenly responsible for anything racist that a person might do premised on her behavior, EVEN if her behavior has nothing to do with race and she genuinely feels she needs help or is being made justifiably uncomfortable by the harassment these guys were engaged in.

Like the conclusion people are drawing is "A lot of cops are racist and black men are often the victims of racist violence, therefore a white woman must suppress her distress at being harassed to protect the people harassing her from racist violence." It's making this woman responsible for the entire system. It won't work. You have to hold the people actually committing acts of racism accountable.

DP. I appreciate your passion, but it's misplaced.

Where did the racism lie in this incident? Was it that a white woman was just trying to go home after a 12-hour shift on the bike she had rented? Was it that she called for help after having the bike she was sitting on forcibly reduced beneath her?

Are you truly arguing that a pregnant woman should just give up a bike she had rented and slink off silently when challenged by four guys? Because that sounds like you're a misogynist.

Another part of your screed that doesn't make sense: how can you yourself be a "former racist" if, as you claim, there's never a circumstance where there's no racism involved?

I've gone out of my way not to use her name (though I now know it) because I thinks he deserves privacy and to not have her name associated with is even in any Google search that might lead to this conversation. I also don't want to reward the people who doxxed her by using the info they revealed.

That said, I honestly have no idea if other people are familiar with her name or not, or whether the people most likely to be patients at Bellevue would recognize it. I imagine a defamation case might explore that, but I'm just saying that it's worth it to acknowledge that the PA's reputation is actually of some actual value in her profession and it does matter if it is destroyed by malicious lies.
