| are kids invited to the AAP orientation or just parents? Thanks |
|
Depends. Generally, if it is in the day, kids are not invited. In the evening, it is. Call the office.
I know of one school (LLIV) where kids were not invited. At our school, (Center), kids were invited. they took the kids around for a tour while making a presentation to the adults. |
| at our school the kids were invited and it was during the day. they kids were given a tour by other children already at the center. DC just arrived late for regular classes at base school that day. base school expected it. |
Take a look at your eligibility letter. Our DC's said "parents and children" may attend orientation. |
| Ours was during the day and kids were definitely invited and were absolutely there! |
| how about haycock? |
| I think they should invite them and leave the rest of the kids in school to suffer...after all, your kids can think like adults and should make the decision of whether to go to this school or not. It only makes sense. They have the mental giftedness to decide anything. Go ahead, flaunt it! You deserve it. |
"Flaunt it?" Really?! So much for grace accompanying accomplishment. |
What??? The kids not at the center for their base school wanted to see their potential new school. At our orientation, they got to take a tour of the school and learn a bit how things work there. After all, it can be traumatic to have to switch schools - especially if you are coming from a small school with very few other students that you know. It only took like 1 1/2 hours, so they didn't miss much school work. |

Well today I told my kid that she cannot go to the level 4 school with her friends tomorrow. Please don't do this to the kids....25% of our second grade class got in aap. That number does not seem right considering the fact that 60% of the population are ESL.
Something is not right. My kid is smart and gifted in verbal and quantitative, but her friends who can draw better got in. Never mind the fact that they don't read as well and don't understand math. It is fine that she not get in, but please FCPS handle this better. These poor left behinds tomorrow will have a sad day indeed. |
They did not accomplish anything. They did very well on a test. Nothing more. Probably born with these abilities. Give me a break. They didn't accomplish anything, their parents did! Excellent job and well done. But don't forget, these are kids being kids...they will brag and be nasty. What about poor little Johnny who should be in, but is not.....should they make him feel stupid. Because this is what is happening. |
| Kids should be invited, but perhaps after school is out for the day? |
Yes. The kids are invited. 2 years ago we attended the orientation with our older child. First there was a presentation for all, then the 3rd grade teachers took the rising AAP students on a tour of the school and answered their questions while the staff answered parent questions, etc. It was wonderful, and we're happy to be attending again with our younger child this year. |
Why don't you appeal if you think it matters to her to go and if you think she really belongs in the aap program. I wouldn't tell her that you were appealing, but I'd do what you think is best for her. Do the WISC and put together a good packet and see what happens. If she gets in then she gets to be with her friends and she's challenged. Do the kids all really know about tomorrow and what it's about? My child just thinks he's going to look at a school tomorrow where he's be able to go to since he likes science and they do interesting science projects. |
I think you are a kind person who has not told their kid how smart they are, but unfortunately I feel you are the exception. Most the kids know what is going on and are talking. I do not mean to diminish anybody and their hard work, but I do see a problem for tomorrow. However, that being said, everyone must learn disappointment so perhaps this is the greatest lesson to learn this time. I do appreciate your post. |
