Well today I told my kid that she cannot go to the level 4 school with her friends tomorrow. Please don't do this to the kids....25% of our second grade class got in aap. That number does not seem right considering the fact that 60% of the population are ESL. Something is not right. My kid is smart and gifted in verbal and quantitative, but her friends who can draw better got in. Never mind the fact that they don't read as well and don't understand math. It is fine that she not get in, but please FCPS handle this better. These poor left behinds tomorrow will have a sad day indeed.
Why don't you appeal if you think it matters to her to go and if you think she really belongs in the aap program. I wouldn't tell her that you were appealing, but I'd do what you think is best for her. Do the WISC and put together a good packet and see what happens. If she gets in then she gets to be with her friends and she's challenged. Do the kids all really know about tomorrow and what it's about? My child just thinks he's going to look at a school tomorrow where he's be able to go to since he likes science and they do interesting science projects.
I think you are a kind person who has not told their kid how smart they are, but unfortunately I feel you are the exception. Most the kids know what is going on and are talking. I do not mean to diminish anybody and their hard work, but I do see a problem for tomorrow. However, that being said, everyone must learn disappointment so perhaps this is the greatest lesson to learn this time. I do appreciate your post.
