um ok … you clearly are waging a battle inside your own mind if you’ve gotten to the point that a phrase like “supportive housing” can set you off like that.

You’re a pretty messed up person if you think dehumanizing people instead of helping them should be called “supportive”. You should take a second to reflect on where your mind is.

zoning zoning ZONING! And density! And streetcars! And bikelanes!

just want to see your head explode.

and omg, this derail started because you freaked the f out when I casually mentioned that an SRO doesn’t seem so bad compared to an aphalt tent city, and then went on to a crazed accusation that I am a nazi because I don’t want homeless people swept up and jailed or institutionalized en masse. You have issues dude - I don’t know what they are - but you should relax.

Its so weird that some people think that zoning is both the cause and solution to all of our social problems. Like every single one.

You live in DC? You are obligated to take a jug of water and some food over to them. Take a selfie of you handing the supplies to him and post it on Instagram.

It's weird how zoning somehow became a culture wars thing. Is it on Fox TV now or something? Zoning is a problem in affordably housing; changes in zoning won't fix homelessness on a fast timeline. Nobody on this thread suggested that - just the antii-zoning nut somehow made that leap when I mentioned SROs. Someone has a zoning fixation, and it ain't me.

You honestly believe that people homeless because of zoning?

So your position is that people too poor to afford housing should be involuntarily committed?

No, but camping in public space not designated as such (let alone defecating, littering, etc) should not be permitted.
Depending on the circumstances, people should be offered options. But many [NOT ALL] homeless are unable to care for themselves due to some combination of addiction, mental illness, and other difficulties. And yes, these people should be involuntarily committed. The "freedom" of living on the streets is not a humane solution.

I believe their bodies stop regulating heat in the same way, when they are wrapped in so many layers of clothes lying on the sidewalk in 100 degree weather. And people think it's humane to 'step over'? yikes.

My point exactly--it's not "humane" or "freeing" to allow people to live on the street. At the same time, I (and most others) are not equipped to safely help and direct a potentially addicted/mentally ill person.

Right. None of us are and the defund folks are obviously trying to make sure we have social worker response teams at the ready. Call 311 (which is the non emergency help line/ not just police) and report the location of the homeless.and your grave concern for their well being. They will make sure the right person is deployed, and as you keep calling our defund Council will make sure more resources are available. You do not need to leave your name or contact info when you call 311.

I’m all for supporting people but not allowing a homeless encampment to be established by my fence. Because it will never go away. They can camp beneath an underpass or on a median - not on a residential corner.

You want people touching your stuff? OP, do not listen to this idiot

Ugh. I’d hate this too! I don’t like homeless people.

Calling the police or social services will probably lead to you being targeted.

Just saw a fellow heading to his evening campout at a NW elementary school. I think we all can agree that anyone who feels the need to be unhoused (since the other option is to accept shelter) doesn't need to do so in a school's back yard.

I'd start pissing on their spot. They'll move.

This thread is chock full of so-called "Urban Moms" who clearly can't handle urban challenges like homelessness.

Most of you would be happier in the suburbs.

This.

Move to a development with a walkable fake “town-center” and call it a day.

lack of affordable housing (which restrictive zoning exacerbates) is one factor.

Urban moms are supposed to be so sophisticated that they are cool with homeless people sleeping next to their homes?
