VA Tech EA

They are really trying to shift to becoming a school of opportunities for those who haven’t had opportunities. If you are high stats and committed, that’s one thing. If you’re using it as one of 5 safety schools, they’d rather skip over you and offer the opportunity to someone who needs it. There are some casualties here: high stats kids for whom VT is first choice but they didn’t apply ED. Chances are good those kids will be accepted through the waitlist; sadly many move in.

Keep in mind also, they will be reabsorbing those who deferred this year. Likely many more than usual.

+1 They've made it clear that increasing enrollment of first-gen and underrepresented groups is a huge priority. If you aren't that and VT is your first choice you really should apply ED. My son didn't want to commit to ED because he wanted to give UVA a shot (rejected there). I was really nervous about that decision but it worked out OK as he did get in to VT.

VT grad from the 90s here. There were a lot of first gen students when I went there. They were southern white people from small, rural VA towns like Galax, Tazwell, and Richlands. First gen doesn’t always mean minority.

Shhhh. That doesn't fit into the narrative of the rampant racists on this thread that want to believe it is unqualified brown kids that are taking their snowflakes spot.

Regular decisions are out. We don't see any change in status for DS. He is waitlisted from EA. Anyone has their status or decision updated in the portal?

Are they? You might want to start a new thread. There will be a lot of waitlist activity this year to track.

A student that was waitlisted would not see a status update in the RD round. The school won’t turn to the waitlist until April at the earliest, I’d guess. This is different from an applicant who was deferred EA; that student would receive a final decision with RD.

Hearing more (anecdotal) stories about Tech this year in NoVA. Valedictorian from a school in the next town over, waitlisted for Tech with a 4.7+. Another kid, different school but in same county. 4.6 GPA, waitlisted for engineering, got into UVA and Georgia Tech, waitlisted at VA Tech.

Everyone is saying the tippy top kids who obviously thought of Tech as a safety are being waitlisted. The next tier down, the high 3s GPA and decent but not great scores, getting accepted. Yield protection plain and simple, even if they do not technically own up to it.

Yes, and it is not just NOVA, same story down here in VB.

I am genuinely curious whether most of the people complaining that their excellent student was not admitted have kids who really wanted to go to VT. So many of the angry statements are followed by: S/he got into a “better” school, or, “They fell in love with another school in the past 6 months, anyway.” I am so sorry to see excellent students turned away IF they really wanted to go there.

Using VT disdainfully as a safety in there “worst case scenario” has left top students who really want to attend in a bad place.

Yes, universities trying to crank their application numbers up in order to appear more desired has also contributed to this. As has the insane quest for choosing a school based on rankings that may not be indicative of the actual undergraduate experience.

It was a safety for mine, waitlisted, and declined (gave up the spot on the waitlist). No disdain or anything along those lines. Just because it's a safety, doesn't mean there's anything wrong with VT or any of the other schools that he considered a safety. And, no. Not everyone is "angry" that they didn't get in. Just puzzled.

It was a safety for my kids (who ended up pulling their apps due to getting into UVA ED) but a very strong safety, which they absolutely would have strongly considered if they hadn't gotten into their first choice. This is primarily because it's an excellent school at an amazing sticker price. So yeah, it may be a safety for many of these kids, BUT they wanted to have the option and alot of them may have gone there.

I do know several people who had V Tech as their target who were waitlisted, who according to our school's naviance, should have been solidy in the green for miles around.
