Charis quoted from the teacher survey. I think that the question is, whether that is legitimate. "Blame" is not the same as identifying the cause of something. Most LAMB parents support the teachers and do not "blame" them for wanting to ensure their own health and safety. Only a few vocal parents are doing that and seeing everything in black and white.

It would also be helpful to know what the teachers need to see in order to ensure their health and safety. It obviously isn't what the school had already done in terms of HVAC, precautions, etc. Is it some metric about community spread? Is it a mortality rate below a certain number? Is it the R-0 below 1? Positive test rate? I understand they might want to have something be true about covid in the local area before they come back and I can certainly understand that. It would be nice to know what that is.

I dont think the teachers know anything about any metrics. All they know is they are afraid and don't want to go to class. Apparently that's enough to cancel school forever.

MOCO has released metrics for when schools open/go back to distance learning etc. it lays it out with exact numbers. I wish DCPS would put something out like that.

MoCo's metrics are out of line with reality and what public health experts recommend (see the other thread on this).

You know how many people in DC have died this month from coronavirus? 16. You're probably more likely to be murdered in DC than die from coronavirus.

Do you have any guidelines that DC schools are following? No? Than this is better than that. Right now we are going on feelings

LAMB had metrics. They just decided to ignore them.

DC is getting mighty close to that magic 10/100,000 metric that would put us as high risk. According to our own metrics. So maybe just maybe that’s what everyone is waiting for so they have a reason not to open.

DC's metric is 15/100,000 = Phase 0/1 (or "high community transmission"). We are at 9.7. Maybe there is a different jurisdiction with 10?

Other metrics (according to DC's standards) have us looking more like entering Phase 3.

Oh wait you're talking about the "high risk" level for other states. Yes, I see your point.

It is not laziness and a lack of caring for children that makes teacher skeptical about DCPS/DCPCS back to in-person school plans. It's fear and distrust. You have to counter fear and distrust with confidence building-measures like rapid testing and isolating students within the school building like they do in Scandinavia.

I'd suggest learning a little more before you slander people you don't know as racist. Almost two-thirds of the people who've died in DC from coronavirus are elderly (at least 70 years old). Most elderly people in DC are 1. African-American and 2. Female.

Do you mean libel?

Who do we think are taking care of elderly African-American women? Their African-American daughters, nieces, and daughters-in-law...wait for it...a lot of them work for DCPS or DCPCS.

Not at LAMB! LAMB is an extremely white school.

I mean, it's half Hispanic, about 15% African-American, and about a quarter white non-Hispanic.

Maybe that's a higher percentage of white kids than other schools, but I wouldn't call that "extremely white".

https://osse.dc.gov/sites/default/files/dc/sites/osse/publication/attachments/2017_Equity_Report_Public%20Charter%20School_Latin%20American%20Montessori%20Bilingual%20PCS.pdf

The school could ask its African-American families how many are taking care of elderly relatives (the answer is probably close to zero), and if they want schools to reopen, instead of simply assuming. But that would require LAMB to consult with parents, which is not its strong suit.

I can't find rates specifically for DC (just totals), but at least on a wider scale death rates for Latino/as are similar to African Americans from covid.

https://www.apmresearchlab.org/covid/deaths-by-race

Not in DC. 75 percent of the people who've died were black. 13 percent were Hispanic (about the same as their share of the overall population).

More importantly, the number of people in DC dying from coronavirus has fallen consistently and dramatically. Here's the number of people who've died in DC each month, according to the city:

March -- 11 people
April -- 220 people
May -- 237 people
June -- 85 people
July -- 32 people
August -- 22 people
September -- 21 people
October -- 16 people

16 people is about how many people are murdered in DC each month.

DP but no. The point is that teachers are refusing to return based on no scientific evidence or expertise. They simply say they are not safe returning, but refuse to articulate something reasonable would make them feel safe.

We don't actually know this. We don't know if they have been asked to articulate anything like this. Please stop being so obstructionist.

Today’s numbers. 10.9/100,000. RO 1.1. Tomorrow’s numbers will be lower because testing was closed Thursday. But the trend is not good

That's not what obstructionist means. Have you seen it articulated anywhere? No. Because they haven't done it. They don't have to be invited to do give a reason. They SHOULD do it when they simply refuse to return because it's not safe. Otherwise, they're actually being obstructionist.

Mayor Bowser very much wants to open schools. It's my understanding that Mayor Bowser is an African-American woman.

Fact check: true.
